cancelled french villa - owner threatening legal action
Comments

Dave (the OP) is being very sensible about this.
If there is a legal liability to pay in full, the insurance will make the payment. If not, then I don't think it is reasonable to expect him to pay it.
The villa owner may have panicked and perhaps hopes that the threat of legal action and demand for immediate payment will prevent him suffering a loss, but is probably bluffing. If there is no legal liability then his court action is doomed to failure, and his refusal to allow the OP time for the insurance to examine the situation is unreasonable, and would prejudice any court against him.0 -

Even if the villa owner took legal action -this is the French legal system -how long do you think it'd take to get to court ? He's panicking or bluffing - depending on your viewpoint.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Is this not what deposits are for? I can't understand this owner and all you coming down on his side. When you book a hotel they say they'll take the first night off your card for a no show or late cancel. This guy has his 480 deposit - end of, good night and shut up.0

If anything, they owe you 480 Euros, as you never took up possession, there is no lease.
