Charging £10 for statements

My Bank have now asked me to pay £10 so I can have a copy of my last 6 years statements. What is the advice on this, and do I have to pay it?

£10 is the statutory fee for a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act. Yes you do have to pay it if the bank insists. Some bank sprovide this information for free but it is a courtesy for them to do so and they are under no obligation.

Yes. It is the standard fee for a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act.

Please read the Reclaim Bank Charges Help thread.

Think yourself lucky they didn't try to rip you off at a fiver a page.

They aren't obliged to supply statements as part of an SAR, but sometimes it's just easier for them if they do.

They couldn't have charged £5 a page (if they did you could simply reclaim it with the other charges). Don't forget for this £10 you're getting back all your charges, good luck :D

There is a bit of confusion about all of this.

If you just ask them for copy statements (because the dog ate them, for example) I'm afraid they can and, as you are asking for something in return, it is a service fee.

However, under the Data Protection Act you can make a Subject Access Request for any personal information held in a information retrieval system (and this does include microfiche) for a fee of no more than £10. Whilst this has to be in an "intelligible" format, it could just be a printout. Martins template request letter also gives them the option of providing copy statements, if it is easier.

I dont think you need to send £10 if you are requesting a list of charges applied to your account, I think you only need to send £10 if you are asking for copies of your statements, maybe Im wrong ??????

the standard letter asking for copies of charges says it includes £10, so i think you do have to pay. it's because you're making a request under the data protection act.

  • Hi
I thought that when i sent my letters to all of my credit card companies that I wouldnt send the £10 fee for the statements as I didnt have the money to do so, the other reason is that i have read that the companies sometimes send the fee back to the claimant anyway, thought id save them and me the trouble!!

However, I think this may backfire on me, as the letter requesting statement information gives the company 40 days to reply.

WILL THE CREDIT CARD COMPANIES MAKE ME WAIT 40 DAYS AND THEN REQUEST THE £10 FEE FROM ME???

    what should i do??

    Thanks
