I just thought I would post with regard to duplicate messages. Something has changed on MSE and it seems it is that that is causing this to happen.
What I do is write my message and highlight and copy it. Then I click post.
I get a message saying it can't be posted and to try again. (This is what causes the duplicates).
Instead of trying again I go back to the original page and refresh it. My post then appears.
I copy my post just in case it disappears in the process0 -

Mrs Lurcherwalker, how did the Teviotdale pie turn out, googled it and it looks good.

Hi JENNY the Teviotdale Pie is really, really lovely, proper ribsticking winter food and I think the suet batter topping would be very nice on other things like stewed steak or my Piggy in the Orchard that I do and would be super on top of anything sausagey as well. It's going into the menu regularly from now on.
I wish to report that the stainless steel treatment worked like magic on my hands, I used a tablespoon and rubbed my hands on it for a few minutes after having potted up 14 jars of onions and there is no residual smell from yesterday either, you know that saying about old dogs and new tricks? It's not true!!! Brilliant tip, thank you so much!!!
I wonder what other old fashioned 'cures' were used in the absence of medicine in the past that actually have a modern application today? Non invasive things like onions in ears etc. I know a well thought of cold cure was to tie a worn and smelly sock round your neck to help a cold, and that seemed to be the amonia in the sweat evaporating off in the heat from your body and helping to clear blocked noses and throats, I've never done it I hasten to add. Things like bread poultices for splinters or boils I have done and know they do work also honey on wounds works, an old carpenters trick with a deep cut was to use honey and cobwebs to stop a wound bleeding, the cobwebs apparently caught the blood cells and helped a scab to form and the honey was antiseptic!!! anyone got a family cure that has been handed down, it would be interesting to hear of any? Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
Gailey your inbox is full! Watch for the postman, you have mail.
Is dull, wet and horrible up here. Knitting more socks. Mortified to admit that I bought 2 boxes of instant porridge in Aldi. But it was cheap and I wanted to try it!0 -
It's not as good as real porridge MAR but, you can make it with boiling water and if the power is out and you can't cook the real thing it's a perfectly acceptable substitute. I've always got a box in the storecupboard for emergency use and we dress it up with dried fruit and golden syrup (sacrilege I know for your scots!) and it tastes fine, Lyn xxx.0

For anyone lucky enough to have an apple tree or access to windfall.Apple Butter
2.5 kg apples (weight after peeling, coring and chopping)
800g granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Peel, core and chop the apples and put in slow cooker.
Mix sugar, cinnamon and salt and pour over apples, mix well.
Put lid on cook on high for 1 hour.
Stir reduce heat to low and cook for 8-9 hours, stir every couple hours until the mix is dark brown.
Remove lid and continue to cook on low for 1 hour.
Gently stir with a whisk to break down any large lumps.
Spoon the mix into glass jars which have been sterilised, put lids on while still hot.
Leave overnight to cool.
Enjoy on toast, bread, as an accompaniment to cheese and crackers or roast pork, in your porridge, the list is endless really.
The mix is not as set as jam more like a thick puree or thick applesuace texture but spreads very easily hence the name apple butter.
Also has much less sugar than traditional jams or preserves.
It works for pears as well or a mix of apples and pears, if using all pears nutmeg is nice in place of the cinnamon.
If halving the quantities the the cook time is roughly half as well.1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480
