Fuddle - my sister is the same she lives in a big house that her dad bought she pays nothing and lives alone and is 30 years old jet setting it. Sometimes I feel really jealous that she has a better dad than Myne as children she always had better because he bought it and in adult life I have often asked my mum why she didn't get me a better dad like her.

I would not be worried about getting a mortgage then because daddy would help. But anyway everything I have we have worked hard for I have my lovely dh and dss she is alone.

    Moving on wards and upwards.

We will possibly sell this and rent but dh says it's dead money I will possibly go alone. My kids come first and this estate is toxic for. Kids.

alfsmum According to the MSE newsletter, your DD can get money off for a year at Amazon using a code from the NUS website. The details are here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cheap-amazon-loopholes?utm_source=MSE_Newsletter&utm_medium=hiya&utm_term=27-Aug-13&utm_campaign=shopping&utm_content=1

Just scroll down to number 10. Hope that helps with the cost of the books xxxx

Thank you SDG. The cost of some of the textbooks is horrendous so I hope Dd will be able to buy some second hand. I will make sure she uses the fiver percent off as she'll be buying stuff from Amazon too and they do 'used' books so it all helps.

Denise, glad to hear you're doing better!

Alfsmum, Ald! vouchers are one Thursday a month and are £5 off a £40 spend. They also usually have about 8 product specific vouchers, often for the more packaged type things, for example this time there are some ready meals, cheese triangles etc. but most times there is at least one of those that is also helpful.

Right, its another long work day for me, and then the gym. Still waiting to find out if we're going berry picking tomorrow.

Hugs to any who need them, and for those of you away, I hope it is going marvellously!

Thanks for the info FPK. Not sure if I could spend £40 in one go in Aldi as I don't know their ranges well enough. I will have a look at teabags, tinned toms etc before the voucher comes round and see if it would work for us.

    Morning all

Beautiful morning here, sunny, blue skies but a really fresh feel. I've dried 2 loads outside already, 3rd is on the line and 4th just finishing in the machine. Means I'll be able to get all the ironing up to date by lunch time.

DD2 goes back on Thursday and DD1 is off to her final college year next week. Then we start looking round 6th forms/college for DD2 and have one more Uni to look at for DD1. Exciting changes for both girls next year.

Need to pop out for a top up shop of milk, cheese and veg this morning (feeding the Inlaws all weekend used up quite a lot of extras)

  • Good morning. Its bright and sunny here today but VERY windy. The wind is pushing the waves into what my DH used to call 'white tops' and the whole scene is very picturesque. I love looking at it but won't be so happy when have to go out.

fuddle, I hope you and your girls get thru the visit of your mum and sister ok. You're right - you don't need the extra stress. Thinking of you.:)

Jem, you really are so good to be thinking about that baby and looking out for her.:)

Well I'm beginning anew voluntary role today so its probably about time I got myself moving.

    Stay well everybody.

  • Morning all,

I've a horrendous headache this morning. I had a read through and couldn't remember anything so came back and still can't remember. However, I do know several of you needed hugs.x

Also, there was someone worried about the cost of books for Uni--a few tricks--

-always check to see if you can buy used. If the book is a new edition then it is worth e-mailing the TA or the lecturer to see if the last edition is ok too. In some of the courses I teach on the last edition is a little different, but not enough to make a difference. In one case the book is substantially different but we only use one of the chapters that has changed so I always tell the student just to get that particular chapter from the library and buy the cheaper option.
-Try both amaz0n and a website called abebooks for used books. Sometimes Abe is cheaper.
-Check notice boards around the lecture halls. Sometimes students from the previous year still have books and will want to sell their old ones.
-Have her look through the courseguide and see just how much reading is needed from each text. If she will only need four chapters from a book six weeks into the term then go to the library NOW before it gets busy and every other student needs those four chapters. You can legally photocopy up to one chapter at a time as long as it is for personal use. How strictly libraries monitor this varies, but it is their job to enforce copyright laws so she may need to go in individual trips for multiple chapters.
-In the event that she needs the book each week (or most weeks) then definitely buy it. Students who don't have the main books for my course almost invariably struggle as there is too much demand in the library.
-Check online to see if an ebook is available. Most textbooks won't be, but there is a service called Dawson era that many university's use that has multiple copies of some textbooks. Reading off screen can be uncomfortable but if it is only for a few chapters it can save some money.

    I hope this helps.

    Morning All,
Remember when the talk was puddings the other day? You'd have to change quantities but here's another that may be worth trying. This is Mary Berry recipe.

Vouchers is now winging it's way, sorry if anyone else wanted it.

I will try again to get any extras I can - my lovely customer does the end of day returns for a paper shop so vouchers just get removed :-)
