I am so excited, sad I know it doesn't take a lot!!! I have just picked the first ever perfectly ripe figs from my Fig tree. He's a Brown Turkey and I got him three years ago from DD1 for christmas. He didn't do very well the first year as he was in an exposed position so last summer we moved him into the back garden and sank his big flowerpot into the soil and now, he's had Figs!!!!! I'm going to make fresh Muesli with chopped figs in for breakfast tomorrow, wow, I love it!!!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Me too SHEILA, my favourite biscuits in the whole world. Picking raspberries in the garden now, new canes in this spring so not many berries this first year but nice flavour so next year should be quantities. The polytunnel continues to amaze me, we are still picking french beans in fair quantities from the original planting that started cropping in June, we've just started harvesting the sweet peppers, have a succession of lettuces, some really good sized beetroot, a basil forest, more cucumbers than I can cope with, hispi cabbage nearly ready to go and some carrots we've only just sown the seed for but lst year they stood over the winter and we used them in early spring, lovely!
We've been overcast most of the day but 23ish outside so not cold and that's given a hatch of something that the seagulls were going frantic for a little earlier on, I think it might be a second lot of flying ants, I've seen lots of ant activity on the ground over the last day or so. Think we might just catch the wet weather and the edge of the storms tomorrow, the garden could certainly do with a wetting.
Have a good evening all, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
My friend in Jersey is plagued by flying ants. I've never seen one.0

They're bigger than ordinary ants, they're the queen ants flying off to mate and set up new nests, eugh horrible things, so many of them at once all flying about low enough to be at head level!!!!0

The mention of fig rolls reminded me of the series "Open all hours" when Arkwright had a surplus of them to shift and was heard declaiming to the actress who later played Norah Batty that the sure way to determine the moral rectitude and fibre of his customers was whether they bought fig biscuits!
Had a nice evening with nearly all dds watching tv and chatting and managed to dissuade DH from making an unwise decision re health, fingers crossed.
Everyone enjoyed the home made rolls, burgers and salad and had strawberries and yoghurt for dessert,"This site is addictive!"

Having seen the Paupers Cookbook mentioned a number of times on different threads I have just had a look on
Amazon thinking I may get it. Cheapest one fifty odd pounds!!! What's that all about? Surely, any one who is looking for a paupers cookbook won't have that sort of money to buy it. Don't they want to sell them?

Fresh figs....Yum! My Dad used to grow them and they were delicious. Not a bit like the dried ones. You're quite right to be excited Lyn, they're not that easy to grow but once established they last for years.
Never seen flying ants Mar? What a sheltered life you've led. They are ghastly things that can deliver quite a bite and they come as a swarm. Ugh!!!!!
Had a day of meetings here. Everyone up for protests and motions of no confidence. I have been delegated to meetings while the Rev keeps her head below the parapet and works on her profile. Very sensibly she is not getting involved in the nasty business, she has had too much of that already.
Such a lovely day, I should have spent it lounging in the garden with a cool drink not drafting resolutions and grievances.
Perhaps tomorrow if it doesn't rain....oh no, there is a ton of runner beans to string, slice and freeze.
