Thank you all so much. It makes sense, absolutely.
Cost aside... Would chips fry in extra virgin olive oil?
The best thing for chips is definately lard as it has the highest "boiling point". Chips cook much better in it than in veggie oil.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Hello everyone. Not feeling too well at the moment so not posting. Still reading & keeping up with you all though.
Hugs to all who need them.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0 -
Oh Hugs Shegar! Bronchitis that sets off suspected asthma isn't fun. I've found hot steamy showers help at night if I'm struggling to sleep, and in the morning a big cup of coffee. The caffeine can help relax the air passages, as can the steam. Obviously both in addition to the medication. I hate using the rescue inhaler at night as it makes me feel a bit anxious--not quite the right word, but I guess you know what I mean.
AOT big hugs to you as well.
I've finished work for the day and been to the gym. Time to get the washing in and have a shower. Visiting cat goes home for good tonight.
Fuddle, old fashioned chips were often fried in lard or beef dripping, but chippy chips now are usually made with veg oil. I was lucky enough to try the old fashioned ones last year when we visited Harrogate. They are nice, but they might take a bit of getting used to if you're used to the ones fried in veg oil.0 -
wow pops just looked at the prices for the killkenny's they expensive £13.50 for an adult ticket and £ each for kids over the age of £8. could go to the town hall for cheaper.!
We normally get a family ticket for £4 to the preston park museum, its really good value as it lasts for the full year! think thats for 2 adults and 2 children. You can even use it if theres only 1 adult and 2 children !
Brr its cold today, woke up at 5:30am and it was so dark, autumn definitely here
Very quick pop in as I'm away for a bus to "My" concert tonight...proper catch up later...yes I was  shocked at that price for the concert too...especially if a family wished to attend. Its expensive anytime but especially in these austere times...
For people local Tyne Tees TV were filming where I was today and its on the local 6pm news(on line later)150th anniversary of a train.
I may possibly be on camera but I was filming the tv reporters filming their report so perhaps not...

Alfsmum have you thought of making Christmas cakes in a cleaned out baked bean tin (half full) and make small cakes for single people. They look really nice when they are iced etc.
Sunshine, hope you are felling ok and Im sure you are already taking care.
Mrs Lw thank you for the excellent xmas gift idea, will be off looking for cherry syrup soon, and thank you Docky, its good to hear you are doing ok after your scary day.
GQ I am disgusted at SG's treatment but not suprised, all organisations have one person who goes the extra mile and gets treated like pooh! SG sounds a fab lady who deserves much better xClearing the junk to travel light

Just as a quick comment: I had bronchitis for ages last winter, it was miserable. I eventually got rid of it by using manuka honey - the +15 strength. It cost an arm and a leg (and I am an out and out cheapskate OSer, obviously!) but it was worth every penny (or pound). The bronchitis started to clear up within a couple of days. It was originally suggested by my neighbour's vet, for an infection one of her dogs had, from a bite, so you can use it internally or externally.... I think it is great stuff, and wouldn't hesitate to use it again, on myself or the animals! HTH, xx0

FUDDLE try sunflower oil for chips, it's a lot cheaper than olive oil and won't make them taste strongly of oil. A cheffy thing to get chips really crispy is to fry them twice, by which I mean you fry them first until they are cooked through and starting to colour, then you hoik them out of the fat and keep them in the chip cooker (the little basket thingy) and reheat the oil until it is really hot, then put the basket of chips back in the oil and fry them until they are crisp and golden. It's supposed to give a better result as the first cook makes the oil cool down and reheating it makes the outsides of the chips really crispy. I hope that makes sense, cos I know what I'm supposed to be saying, I just hope I did!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Ginnyknit, what a good idea about the tins. I guess I would need to line them and wrap in brown paper to protect?0 -
Mrs LW you make perfect sense to me! I had to give my mini fryer away as I was eating too many chips
but I used vegetable oil and sort of "blanched" the chips, then let them drain and cool, then fried them up hot.
Thanks for the tips re. bronchitis - and hugs to you AOT, I hope you feel better soon.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

Sorry JPscloud! I mis-remembered who had bronchitis. I suspect I do that a lot trying to keep up with who posts what. I do hope anyone else I have done that to will forgive me.
Apparently, visiting cat was not a mouser. She has just left, and when OH went to draw the curtains next to the chair where she sleeps a small mouse crawled up. I am not pleased. We saw one in the kitchen back during the heatwave but thought it had come in the door. I haven't seen any other evidence, but this in my view confirms it. We're pretty fastidious with food, but it looks like its time to get all soft packaging into glass/boxes and notify the landlord.:(0
