SQ, sand shouldn't be able to get into a verruca. the best advice I ever got re:them was to walk barefoot in the sand. it's such a gentle abrasive that you can't feel it, but it does wear them down and in lots of cases (mine and my sisters included) gets rid of them completely xx

sorry, I've just realized you said he doesn't like the texture of sand x

I love the sun but it doesn't like me and I get very burnt very easily so I use Uvistat sun block its not cheap but to me its worth its weight in gold rather than skulking under a sun brolly all the time.years ago when a lot younger I even was prescribed it by my then Dr as I have such a strong reaction to the sun.I also freckle dreadfully :):) a real pale skinned person. My late OH used to tan beautifully and never ever burned at all, in fact he kept a lot of his tan even when the weather changed and his arms especially were always tanned. My eldest DGS Danny has his granddads skin and he too tans but porr henry my no. 4 DGS has skin like mine bless him and is very blonde and fair skinned and has to have lots of jollop on him every day before he goes to school
  • Morning Toughies another beautiful day in prospect, maybe slightly cooler than yesterday but still georgeous. I never was able to cope in hot weather, was the drooping one scuttling from patch of shade to patch of shade and feeling very sorry for myself indoors on days like these. I had such a sea change though on a trip to Belgium as part of a school tour of the 1st World War Battlefields about 10 years ago. It was wonderful weather just like this, unbelieveably hot and in a coach without air conditioning, phew!!! However one day we went to Ypres for the Menin Gate Ceremony in the evening and the temperature shot so high it was almost impossible to cope, we had kids fainting and feeling so uncomfortable in the heat but, it was as if a switch got turned off in my head and I found I could cope with it easily, I made sure to keep hydrated and that was not pleasant as all the bottled water was hot by then, but now I can 'do' the heat, to the point of enjoying being out in the full sun at the height of the heat and thinking this is fantastic. It makes such a difference to life now, and I can actually enjoy the summers however hot, Cheers Lyn xxx.

    Good morning. :)

Pleased it's cooler for you Lyn. It's dull here today with temps of 16degrees and a bit breezy. I'm so pleased as it's bathroom/toilet cleaning day.

With my two and sand (they don't like it either) I think it's best to be bare foot and free than having sand get into things. My best tip? Dust talcum powder over arms, legs and feet. It helps dust the sand right off without too much sticking. HTH :)

A real win over marketing here today/last night. DD is having a tudor picnic today and needed a snack of tudor like food. I wanted/have sent her with a bottle of water (from tap) and a tub of buttered crackers with ham, cheese and grapes. She, on the other hand, wanted 'lunch4bles like everyone else mam!'

    these 536b1ad0-d80c-430e-b92e-e46b4ea90b0a_Spec2_v1_m56577569834154343.jpg

£1.50 for a 6 small crackers size of r1tz and little bits of cheese/ham cut out same shape. I won't pay it, especially as I have stuff in as standard. So cue major learning curve to help her see. 'Free' 'buttered''grapes''much bigger pieces''just like the tudor's as they didn't have branded food''don't forget businesses want you to buy things in nice packaging so they can get rich'

She's gone happy and I suspect other kids will have made at home varieties but shesh, that kid is so under the influence of peer pressure. DH said to just get it so she will eat and I was tempted if she was adamant she needed it but she's gone happy with her arm of reasons to be proud of her tupp4ware box filled with loot.

As it's cooler were having stewing steak tonight, it's SCing away in onion gravy as I type. Yorkshires (for kids/DH - trying to keep as primal as possible still) and roast parsnips. Dare I say I'm a bit fed up of salads and looking forward to meaty gravy tonight.

Oh and tinned cheapy mackerel? DH nicked my half left for lunch today. Going down very well here and soon to be stocked up on for stores and SHTF scenarios. (I like the variety in tomato sauce. Very flavoursome.

I was reading more of the primal blueprint last night and it suggested we need 4000iu a day of Vitamin D. Said we can get 5000-10000iu within 30 minutes of sun exposure. The super strength variety I can find is 1000iu so when DH is paid I'm going to get for us and take on days in the summer where I can't get any sun and top up with in the winter. Really, really interesting. I've never been able to get at facts and figures of how much we need/likely to get so hope it helps some of you.

DH is very health conscious at the moment and asked for Omega3 supplements (but non of that women's cod liver oil stuff that I take... huh? difference being?) Cod Liver Oil is cheaper than Omega3 - think he needs a lesson in marketing!

    That's all folks. I'm sure you're relieved ;):D:p:)
  • Well done FUDDLE that is a lesson well taught about the lunches and hopefully will lead her to question peer pressure over other things, good parenting there pet!!!!! Find yourself a little independent pharmacy and they are likely to have thier own range of generic supplements at a fraction of the prices they charge for the branded ones and wilkos own brand will be much cheaper as well and quite likely exactly the same ingredients as in the very expensive ones, if needs be save the tub from the expensive ones and fill it up with the cheapies, is that an underhand suggestion??? Cheers Lyn xxx.

thanks kidcat for both posts. I will buy some of that spray on plaster and already have strong plaster on a roll that sticks like glue, will just give the skin around the verucca a wide berth as it is very raw (and guess what DS can't handle plasters well either, what patience we parents have eh?!0

TBH I never buy anything other than basic first aid/medicinal stuff unless there is a need IFYSWIM. My friend has masses of branded stuff for every ailment whereas I try and use non-brand multipurpose stuff (witch hazel gel anyone? :D). I baulk at the prices of some stuff like you fuddle. However if anyone is in genuine need of anything for comfort etc I don't hesitate to buy it.

Fuddle my two take little tubs of various fruit/salad and things like little crackers and breadsticks depending on their tastes/what's cheap/needs using up. Very occasionally they ask for x, y and z brands like some friends. I point out how healthy their lunches are and how strong they are growing (works for boys, girls might need a slightly different angle I know) and how much I love them to spend time making their lunches (far quicker to bung in pre-packed stuff). They get Allydee crisps or similar on Fris which helps and I make a big thing of their homemade muffins etc which they are love and are proud to show their friends though wouldn't give them a bite! Stick to your guns, your lunches are cheaper and healthier and maybe let them have something with a cheap brand like Allydees own once a week? Only a suggestion. If they had a competition once in a while at school for the healthiest lunches with a little healthy prize, that would help. I might suggest that to our school - but then I feel sorry for those who take 2 packs of crisps for their lunch, poor kids.

I need to go out and collect prescriptions and want to walk for the exercise but stalling as its nice and cool in here. Then will pop in a couple of shops to see it I can get swim shoes before last session of counselling skills course today.

Keep cool, keep calm and carry on toughies!

Excellent suggestion to fill up the expensive pots with non-branded ;) Not underhand at all, well I don't think so anyway.

Wilko's have very good selection of first aid stocks for cheap (triangle bandage I got there and struggle elsewhere) so will look at their supplements next time I'm over. homebargains do some supplements, it's where I get the kids' multivits from so will look closer next time.

    sq, I'm surrounded by Ald1 and L1dl ;) will have a look, ta :)

Phew I have just finished reading the last thread!
I don't know, you just waited till I went on my hols didn't you :)

I will start reading this one now but not today.

Cheapskate hugs to you. My mother is having memory problems and now lives with my baby sister (now in her 40's). We had our 40th wedding anniversary a few weeks ago and had a little family party. My mother came and I chatted with her for the first time in over 30 years (long story). It became clear she did not know who I was and she seemed to think I was her twin sister.

I feel sad that we never had a good relationship but I made sure my kids never felt that about me and tried to be the best mum I could be.

Some of my kids paid for our holiday as a surprise so I have now finally visited Norfolk.

I am trying not to be on here too much now as there are some bad health problems in my immediate family as well as myself and I must concentrate on that for the moment. I will probably skim read as much as I can but may put up a link or two if I find anything useful.

Looking forward to this programme tomorrow http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b036yrm8 Nick and Margaret: We all pay your benefits.

I am hoping for some good discussions, some opportunity to look and compare how I live on what DH earns compared to people living on benefits. I hope it isn't benefit bashing, but compare, contrast and education of the two, spark some thoughts in my own mind and hopefully further tips on how string out the pennies. If it is sensationalism I'll turn off. I'm not interested and moaning at the tv for 'entertainment'.
