Nothing wrong with someone waiting till they're married to have sex, of course, but I find this whole ceremony idea very disturbing, and the idea that a daughter belongs to her father until she gets married is just going back to the Dark Ages.
The thing I find creepy is 'your daddy is your boyfriend'.0 -

Evening Everyone!
Sorry about the bad stuff, physical and mental - what gets into families I do not know. All I know is that they rarely change, so hard as it is, for sanity's sake it is usually better to cut ties.
Tomorrow we visit our prospective new family member
His name is lucky and he is about 6 months old. To say I am excited is something of an understatement! We will have to wait for just over a week before we can bring him home as we have a weekend away at the end of the month, it will be a very long week indeed!
Hope all new kitties, and prospective kitties, make you a happy as I am!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -

I saw that - it's pretty creepy. On the other hand, it's not that different from First Holy Communion where you get to dress up in a white dress (assuming you're a girl!) and you're the centre of attention for the day. Difference is, of course, the boys do it too.
And if you're Irish, it's a real money spinner (though that's more Confirmation - think families know the kids would be a lot less keen otherwise)
I usually lurk, but would like to set the record straight. The First Holy Communion is the bigger money spinner, everyone knows who has made their First Holy Communion by the clothes they wear, girls in white dresses and boys usually very smartly dressed and wearing a white rosette with a first communion medal, so people who are out and about like neighbours, people who would know their parents etc. would usually give a child money. Whereas with Confirmation most children wear their school uniform or a surplice over their new clothes for the actual ceremony and it is not obvious that they have made their Confirmation.
For the record I am Irish. living in Ireland, I have made my First Holy Communion and Confirmation as has my husband, my daughter who is 22 and my son who is 18. I was very MSE even in those days my daughter's dress, underskirt, bag, shoes and veil were bought in a charity shop for the princely sum of 20 punt in our old money in 2000, which was the equivalent to £20 sterling then.
I love to read about everyone, I also love how you support one another through the bad times and good. Its great that people are anonymous and have a place to vent their frustrations without consequences and helped with reasonable replies.:beer:Stashbusting 2015 6/23 :j0 -

Princess: You can pick your friends but not your family is so true. BUT that doesn't mean you have to see your family. I haven't spoken to my mother this year and life is good. She was pretty horrid when I told her my tests were clear for stomach and bowel cancer last year. Then she outdid herself at Christmas. Card sent, flowers delivered, phoned twice on The Day and got her answering machine both times. She sent only one of my sons a card, I didn't get one nor did my oldest son. She never returned the calls, so I decided at New Years I was done. So all of a sudden she remembers both my sons birthdays (cards and a cheque) and phones this week and wound up speaking with the oldest to tell him she's just back from her latest cruise. Do I care? No not really.
The Purity Ball thing? It seems to affect only very strange segments of Americans. Usually they are very fundamental/born again Christians and live in the mid-west states. Or they are quite well off and again very born again Christians. The funny/sad thing about this is usually the kids go off the rails and more than one daughter has wound up a teen Mum. For some reason, I think Sarah Palin's family did this with her oldest daughter, who we all know had a baby in tow during her Mother's election campaign and now does a birth control public service ad.
Congratulations on the new furkids. Kittens are sweet but the entire litter box issue is why I'll never be a cat person. The puppy is very sweet looking and will be a livewire.
Now, I'm off to bed because I'm on nights this weekend.0 -
Hi Future is Bright,
that's interesting. I'm Irish Catholic myself (hence the user name - born in the Marian year, me) but have always lived in England. I don't think English Catholics tend to give big monetary presents to the children either for First Holy Communion or Confirmation compared with Irish families. My DD2 was confirmed when she was 13 but her best friend from school was only confirmed at 15. She comes from a big Irish family and was given some really large cheques by the extended family. DD2 pointed out the difference!!
I think in France they still have a tradition called Communion Solomnelle. It comes at about age 17-18 and is the equivalent of renewing their vows, because they will have already made their First Communion at 7. It used to be an excuse for well off bourgeois families to launch their marriageable daughters into society at the right age with a big party and a white dressIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I'm a protestant, well at least I was raised as one, and my German family are all Lutherans, so I know nothing about First Communions (I believe I took mine after I was confirmed) but in their church Confirmation is a very big deal indeed. Every single family-member, friend and neighbour gives cash. As in folding. Often presented in extremely inventive and decorative ways. One of my nieces was given a framed picture of flowers, every single one of which was made from a folded bank-note. She received a small fortune.
Almost everything about their Confirmation is the precise opposite of what it is here, all of the young people go to church dressed in navy or black, never white.0
