    It'd seem a bit odd if you can drive a 40,000kg truck+trailer combination but not a 3500-8250kg car+trailer combination

Agreed - I wonder if there are really lorry drivers out there who've had to spend £500+ on a B & E test (and training) just so they can tow that car/trailer combination? If so surely this is just a loophole that needs to be closed, so that 'C & E' also gives rights to 'B & E'? Maybe someone in Brussels just overlooked it years ago and it's never been sorted out.

From what I read and understand (https://www.gov.uk/driver-certificate-of-professional-competence-cpc/overview) you only need a CPC if you are being paid for driving.

Vehicle uses where you don’t need Driver CPC

You don’t need Driver CPC if the vehicle you drive is:
    • used for non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods for personal use
    • used to carry material or equipment you use for your job - but driving the vehicle can’t be the main part of your job
    • used for driving lessons for anyone who wants to get a driving licence or a Driver CPC
    • used by, or is under the control of, the armed forces, civil defence, the fire service and forces responsible for maintaining public order
    • used in states of emergency or for rescue missions

Not everyone, only professional drivers, and it also depends on the use of the vehicle.

Yes your right but the rules of who needs one and who doesnt is a very grey area i.e if a mechanic was taking a vehicle for MOT he needs a cpc but if he is carrying his tools with him he doesnt need one very stupid indeed

I have D+E which automatically gives me other entitlements i.e B+E

I read today that the DSA and VOSA are merging to try and simplyfy a very complicated system

Does D & E mean bus & trailer? That sounds like a difficult test to pass!

Yes its a bus /coach with a trailer its like everything else it just takes to practice to perfect.

megabus use a lot of trailers on thier high capacity long distance coaches due to the amount of luggage.

those bendy type buses are D+E although not a trailer as such it bends in the middle tricky to reverse but with practise it gets easier.

Bendy buses being 'tricky to reverse' sounds like the understatement of the year!

Most modern bus depots coach station operate a one way system drive in fuel up through the wash then parked up for the next shift even the workshops are like a drive through so there is never really much reversing involved..

The licensing system is stupid in my opinion. I passed my D+E back 1987 in an automatic coach.I then sat a cat D in a manual coach but i cant drive a manual bus/coach if it has a trailer.most modern buses coaches are automatic or have electronic gear boxes like volvos ishift they dont have a clutch pedal but you can still operate the box manually
