no such official vehicle category as 'class 2'....that is a relic of a bygone age.

For a goods vehicle over 7.5 tonne ...regardless of how many axles it has, it is a Cat C licence.

For a goods vehicle over 7.5 tonnes, with a trailer , it is C+E. Regardless of whether that trailer is articulated, drawbar, or whatever.

But for 7500kg or less he just needs the C1.

    Absolutely correct!

However, I wasn't responding to the OP's issue, but to another post altogether within the thread.

Just going back to the C1, can you get lessons for this catogory rather than paying over £1200 for a LGV or is cat1 classed as lgv?
All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.

Yes you can....however, since the test itself is the same basic test, the cost of training may well be the same.

Also, there may be issues with providing a C1 vehicle to 'minimum-test-vehicle' standards?

Check out local LGV driver training schools for advice on this matter?

    Slightly off topic, but..
If you have a C & E licence, but passed car test after 1997, do you still need to pass a car & trailer test if you want to drive a car with a large trailer? Even though you can drive an articulated lorry already!

The wording (from here implies you can only drive category C vehicles with a trailer. But that seems daft, so it's probably worth a call to the DVLA to clarify it.

Does a category C automatically allow C1 as well? It'd be odd if you could drive under 3500kg and over 7500kg but nothing in between.

It depends what categories are on your licence, if it is only 'B', you are restricted trailers up to 750kg. For heavier trailers you need 'B+E'.

But does the +E on the C only apply to 'C' vehicles or would it also imply C1+E and B+E.

    It'd seem a bit odd if you can drive a 40,000kg truck+trailer combination but not a 3500-8250kg car+trailer combination
  • Dont forget that you also have to get a DCPC driver certificate of profesional competence. if you have c1 on your license.

This takes effect from sept 2013 for bus and coach drivers and sept 2014 for drivers of large vehicles including 7.5 t.

so if you have this entitlement pre 1997 you will need to do 35 hrs periodic training otherwise your 7.5 ton license is useless.

I had to get one for my job as a coach driver costing around £400 you do 5 days training @7hrs per day

Its quite complicated as to who needs a dcpc so best thing is to go on to the DSA website to see what you need to do to keep your c1 entitlement
just because you are paranoid doesnt mean to say they are not out to get you
