Quick question as my son is not around to ask this.

My son is 23 and been driving for around 5 years so possibly passed his test in 2008

Can he drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle? I know its on my licence but i passed my test some 20 odd years ago.

Probably not. I can't remember what year they changed it, but my friend who's 28 doesn't have the C class on his licence, so it changed long before your son took his test.

What does it say on his licence? The photocards have a list on the back.
You had me at your proper use of "you're".

Have to have passed their car test before 01 Jan 1997. To have it automatically.

No. He'll be restricted to 3500kg as he passed in 2008 (after 1997), unless he's got a cat C/C1 qualification on his license (he'll have had to sit a test for it).

I don't see where you said you'd looked at his license. You said he wasn't around to ask, which I at least, assumed you meant you were asking on his behalf. Are you actually asking on your behalf, so you don't need to ask him to look at his license?

In any case, unless he's passed a test for it the answer is no.

Your son will need to pass his Class 2 (C) to be able to drive a 7.5T lorry. It will cost in the region of £1000 if he passes first time. Once he has a Class 2 licence he will be able to drive much larger lorries than a 7.5T too

He only need to gain a category C1 to drive a vehicle of 7.5T MAM

no such official vehicle category as 'class 2'....that is a relic of a bygone age.

For a goods vehicle over 7.5 tonne ...regardless of how many axles it has, it is a Cat C licence.

For a goods vehicle over 7.5 tonnes, with a trailer , it is C+E. Regardless of whether that trailer is articulated, drawbar, or whatever.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Assuming the DVLA didn't accidentally lose it when converted to a photocard.

Not that it matters in this case because, as you say, 1997 is the cut-off point, but worth mentioning for others who may find this thread.

Although you can tow a trailer up to 750kg on Cat C.
