The only valid thing about the op is the general idea - a MacBook is a reasonable investment due to low depreciation. The details of their post, however, are complete bunkum.

Apple stuff does work well together, but has a limited lifespan in terms of support. My iPod Touch 2G is now effectively abandoned. I'm stuck at iOS 4.2, and all my apps now have no updates because the developers have moved on. I'm forced to upgrade my hardware if I want to keep my software up to date.

Compare this to an Android device, which can be upgraded at will because of the open source nature of the software.

    Exactly!!!

I was responding to somebody who thought it couldn't be done with Macs and highlighted "myself" in their reply.

Surely all you need to say is "I upgraded the RAM and HDD on my macbook pro, it's quite simple once you read up about it".
I was stressing just how simple it is. ;)

I would never dream of saying "I upgraded the RAM and HDD on my MBP myself too - and I'm black!". Because, quite frankly, what has my race got to do with it? Ditto with gender.
You are essentially implying that "it's so simple even a girl can do it", which is just demeaning and disrespectful to both yourself and other women.

I'm sure you meant it as a joke, so please accept that i'm not 'having a go', but trying to point out that casual sexism just helps to proliferate negative and regressive social stereotypes. Which i'm sure you'll agree, are just not relevant in today's society! I guess it's also because I don't come across this sort of comment very often, so it seems all the more shocking to me.

    Shocking?! Wow.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to cover this in detail - I've a shower to seal, shelves to put up and an oil change to do on OH's motorbike. ;)

I see that many people buy a PC because they think it is cheaper. I d like to start a debate :)

i think a PC is not that cheap. A macbook is not so expensive for the following reason:

    Depreciation:
Macbook value depreciates slowly so that you keep the value of your macbook in time and you can always sell it again. Go to Ebay, you will be perhaps surprised of macbook high prices aged 3 years. On the other hand, in 3 years your PC will worth nothing.

    No antivirus, defrag, registry cleaner
Nobody uses an antivirus, an anti spyware, an anti adware, a registry cleasner on a macbook. However, on the PC, antivirus is strongly recommended and you have to pay a license every year. You don't need to buy maintenance software with a mac.

    Planned obsolescence:
I think it is 6 years for a macbook in aluminum. I say 6 years because the baterry life is 6 years. You can find a way to change the battery and get 6 more years i guess. Since 2-3 years you can see that plastics of notebook PC really got less and less strong whatever the brand & whatever the price. For instance, you see the same plastic body for a $900 samsung & a $600 samsung pc laptop. I am convinced that engineers reduced planned obsolescence of PC laptops. If you look at Pc bodies from 2005 you can see they are much more robust. On the other hand, a macbook comes with a unibody meaning a piece of metal that have been shaped to become a computer. It is a tremendous difference between a piece of metal and a piece of plastic. I hardly see how light plastics can last in time.

    Doing things faster:
You can do everything faster on a macbook because your computer will not be slowed by antivirus & resident programs (the one in the right lower corner of the computer. You also don't need a driver because your macbook download & install drivers automatically in 9 times out of 10.

It's a shame that your Mac did not come with a spell checker.

First off a computer, of any sort, isn't an investment, it's a tool, or a toy

Second, a Mac is a PC!

The RAM on my Mini (2010) is fairly easy to upgrade from the inadequate 2GB that it comes with as standard.
