Why a macbook is a good investment.

I see that many people buy a PC because they think it is cheaper. I d like to start a debate :)

i think a PC is not that cheap. A macbook is not so expensive for the following reason:

Depreciation:
Macbook value depreciates slowly so that you keep the value of your macbook in time and you can always sell it again. Go to Ebay, you will be perhaps surprised of macbook high prices aged 3 years. On the other hand, in 3 years your PC will worth nothing.

No antivirus, defrag, registry cleaner
Nobody uses an antivirus, an anti spyware, an anti adware, a registry cleasner on a macbook. However, on the PC, antivirus is strongly recommended and you have to pay a license every year. You don't need to buy maintenance software with a mac.

Planned obsolescence:
I think it is 6 years for a macbook in aluminum. I say 6 years because the baterry life is 6 years. You can find a way to change the battery and get 6 more years i guess. Since 2-3 years you can see that plastics of notebook PC really got less and less strong whatever the brand & whatever the price. For instance, you see the same plastic body for a $900 samsung & a $600 samsung pc laptop. I am convinced that engineers reduced planned obsolescence of PC laptops. If you look at Pc bodies from 2005 you can see they are much more robust. On the other hand, a macbook comes with a unibody meaning a piece of metal that have been shaped to become a computer. It is a tremendous difference between a piece of metal and a piece of plastic. I hardly see how light plastics can last in time.

Doing things faster:
You can do everything faster on a macbook because your computer will not be slowed by antivirus & resident programs (the one in the right lower corner of the computer. You also don't need a driver because your macbook download & install drivers automatically in 9 times out of 10.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Macbooks being sold now will possibly not support future versions of OS-X.
Macbooks are ridiculously overpriced. I can buy my next 3 laptops for the price of a macbook meaning I will be current in 9 years time for the same price as 1 macbook now.
There are virus's and malware for Macs. Not being protected is silly, no matter how small the risk.

I like Apple stuff, I work with Macs and have qualifications in OS-X administration. I don't have any at home because they are expensive accessories for people to say they have one, nothing else.

    Depreciation

When I buy a laptop I never plan on selling it, its going to get used till I kill it. Its a lot easier and cheaper to get parts should I need it with anon Mac. Try looking on eBay for spare macs parts batteries ect and compare to other laptops

    No antivirus, defrag, registry cleaner

As macs become more popular there more and more spyware and virus appearing out there

    Planned obsolescence

Obsolescence is PC/laptop is more to do with there processing power, there plenty of laptops that have alloy cases, lipo battery are pretty much universal in there lifespan you won't get 6 years out of Mac battery unless your not using the bat. As I'm not paying over inflated Mac price I can afford a more powerful laptop to begin with, so it'll last longer.

    Doing things faster:

I can either buy a Mac or buy a windows based laptop with much more processing power for the same price.

Also three the fact your locked into software that works for the Mac only. Reduced amount free software. Locked into there accessories.

A macbook is not a good investment.
It costs twice as much as a Windows laptop same spec.

When it breaks down a couple of months after you bought it and you take it in to the apple store they will refuse to warranty repair it because one of the water sensors went pink (never used it anywhere near water), and try to charge you just slightly less than it cost new to repair it.

    Well that's my experience anyway.

I've had 2 MacBooks in the past 9 years. My husband has had around 6 non-mac laptops in the same time. He's a heavy user, and looks after them but they just seen to fall apart.

I dropped my 1st MacBook umpteen times - it even survived a 3ft drop onto a tiled floor. Current MBP nearly 5 years old and still going strong despite being treated badly by toddler. When the optical drive failed 6 months out of warranty it was replaced free. I've upgraded the hard drive and memory to the max size allowable. It will need a new battery soon, but after 5 years of daily use I don't think that's too bad really!!

I love my Macbook Pro. I've had it for 3 years and it's still as fast as the day I bought it. Never have to worry about viruses etc. I would never go back...

Yes, so is my PC. In fact, my PC is faster since I have upgraded the HDD and RAM myself.
But the market has moved on, so in relative terms yours is much further behind, compared to mine; and cost much more for less power, choice & sustainability.

    As above; absolutely not true.
Assuming that this continues to be the case, despite their increasing popularity, and therefore shunning antivirus software is foolhardy.

I upgraded the RAM and HDD on my MBP myself too - and I'm a girl!

In what way is it "behind"??

Agree with your point re viruses. Just because there are very few now doesn't mean there will not be more in future.

Evidently I've been under the impression its harder to do than it really is. Not because you're a girl; I thought Apple made it deliberately difficult.

In what way is it "behind"??.

Because the market has moved. If you've upgraded, then perhaps yours isn't. But for the same price, macs are always behind.
