Definitely worth looking for a small independent shop, especially if you can find one that specialises in kids shoes. I don't know where you are to say where to start though? There is one in Peterborough who are very helpful, I think they're called Footprints. I also spoke to a very helpful lady in Russell and Bromley in Exeter recently, who seemed to really know shoes. Places like Brantano I think tend to cater more for the 'standard' rather than unusual.

I had the opposite problem with my son, very narrow feet. But I never liked Clarks much, he had Startrites, or some of the European brands, Elefanten, Ricosta etc.
  • Thank you for all your feedback - I think the plan will be to try to get something suitable in the next few weeks - trying Clarks and some others local to us will be the next step.

My CD is a 4G at nearly 17 months. For her first shoe, Clark's had nothing suitable and we got her some beautiful little shoes from a local independent store, can't recall th brand but they were German I think. She's had a pair of Clark's and she just got some startrite from John Lewis yesterday.

Stunning little shoe, lightweight and well padded, picture doesn't do justice

Oh and Clark's measurements are only for their own shoes, they won't b the same size in every shoe

Clarks have some size 2G online for girls so I would guess they would have some in store as well :) I would definitely say go into a store though and get her fitted for whichever specific shoe you go for. Depending on style she might need slightly different sizes.

DS had (and still does have) chunky little feet, his first pair were a 2.5 G.

    Good luck finding some!

Brings back memories of ringing all the Clarks stores in the county to try and track down some H fitting shoes for DD1. We also ended up at an independent store for many years. They often had to fit a size bigger to get the width, however, and we had to be careful to lace them up carefully to make sure her feet didn't slip in them.

We were usually impressed with the care taken by fitters at John Lewis, who sell Start-Rite, too.

We went to Brantano where they had one in our size which didn't fit and we were told to order online which is where we are today.

You've just convinced me not to go to Brantano when my baby needs some shoes. I think it's poor advice to suggest that shoes can be bought online, even if the machine (or however feet are measured these days) says someone's a 2G, you won't know how the shoes fit until they're actually on. Obviously you'll be able to return them, but it relies on you assessing whether they fit or not, and I think I'd prefer that advice in store.

My LO has size 4G feet. We got hers from John Lewis... and funnily enough, i think they're the ones in the link (only in red)! :)

had the exact problem with our 2 when they were younger. I would recommend an independant trader. We came across a lovely shop near where we live. Assessed the girls feet/how they walked/thorough measurement. Not just a quick measure. We were limited with the size of the girls' feet, and often needed up getting continental shoes (elephanten being one of the makes that I could remember).
