Two years ago I got what appeared to be a forged £20 note from cash point outside my bank. I went straight into the bank and made a complaint. The manager agreed that the note was fake and it was taken off me. A month later I received a letter confirming the note was fake along with an apology. They credited my account £25.

Oh come on guys, quit the scare mongering, were talking about a single note and a one off occasion here. Just spend it in Sainsburys, I'm sure it won't see them struggling. With the possibility of being out of pocket I wonder how many of you text book do gooders would actually do the 'right' thing! For some people, £10 is a lot of money!!!!

There's a difference between knowing what's right and doing what's right. We all know what the speed limit it, yet many of us don't think twice when hitting 65 in a 60 for example

You are quite right that Sainsburys won't struggle over losing a tenner. However the same cannot be presumed for the next person in the queue who could potentially end up with the dodgy tenner in their change.

Kudos to the op for not wanting to try to make two wrongs into a right!
If my posts have random wrong words, please blame the damn autocorrect not me :D

    Exactly.

How 'cash rich' does a person or organisation, have to be, before you can think that its OK to pass off on to them a fake banknote?

Its annoying to get a counterfeit note, but I think its better to use legitimate means to obtain redress (a police report, and complaint to companies involved)

Who told you the note is fake?

I was point blank refused service in a pub last week due to my photocard driving license, which I got from the DVLA and have had for two years and has been accepted numerous times before, being fake and 'missing' a hologram. I was quite offended by this, so I went to the local police station who, after inspecting the license, confirmed the manager of the pub was talking out of his bottom.

What you have to be aware of is Sainsburys do not fill the ATM's up. They are filled by a 3rd party.
Not true. A cousin used to work at a large Sainsbury's store in the cash office. She say's if the ATM was running low the Admin (cash office) manager would often end up filling it.

Wouldn't suprise me if it's Sainsbury's policy to get rid of dodgy note's via the ATM. Afterall, profit maximisation is all they care about.

I'd think twice before doing that again. When I worked in a shop, each time someone handed over a fake note I would radio for the nearest police officer to come and hang on to the note while the customer waited.

as its already been pointed out its breaking the law to knowingly passing on fake currency, for a large company to do it , if found guilty would be bad they would have a massive fine and the book thrown at them, so why would they risk it,
they would hand it in and claim it on there insurance.

As Southend1 has said, we have been told to do exactly the same thing, Sainsbury do not seem to follow the same rules. Do not try to spend it, do as others have said and inform the police.
