Debit card fraud

Not sure if this is the right forum section (couldn't see one just for debit cards) but here goes anyway.
Having just been temporarily defrauded of £25 by misuse of my debit card details, I'm going through all of the inconvenience of stopping the card and having a new one issued. This means that until I get the new card, I can't access online banking or use the old card. I'm also down £25 until I can claim it back when I get the new card.
I strongly suspect that the details were obtained by someone using software (usually an app) to access via the new pinless system, which I already told the bank that I do not want. The bank are not interested and say that I have to have the facility. Why do I have to have part of a system installed, just because there are so many lazy !!!!!!s out there who can't be bothered to use a PIN?
Does anyone know of a campaign to get the banks to remove this facility from cards when requested? If not, I will consider starting one, to try to get the banks to do what the CUSTOMER wants!!!

Why do you have to wait until you get a replacement card to be reimbursed?
Remind them of their responsibilities to reimburse your account immediately.
As for not liking contactless technology, I'm sure the Daily Mail are getting a bit over excited about it. Personally I'm glad the resistance to ATM cards, credit cards and debit cards was eventually overcome. They all make my life a little easier, as does contactless.
People still get defrauded with old-fashioned passbooks. Fraudsters will always find a way. But it's the bank who stands the loss.
While I support any initiative to get them to improve their fraud prevention systems around contactless technology, I am absolutely against any campaign to crawl back in to a cave by reversing progress.0 -

Whcih bank are you with ? I don't understand why having one card stopped / getting issued with a new card mean that you are unable to access online banking ?0 -
Out of interest, do you have any evidence it was due to contactless?0

You could always change banks to one that offers the choice of card you want.0

Normal practise to stop further fraud.wurlitzerwilly wrote: »This means that until I get the new card, I can't access online banking or use the old card. I'm also down £25 until I can claim it back when I get the new card.
Why do you need the card for online banking?
Think about it, if you can use the old card. So can a fraudster....

Well given you have not mention who the fraud is too. Over how many transactions.
Because if its contactless fraud then it has to be more than one...
Most of the contactless card if read by one of these so called readers get less info than on a retailer till roll...wurlitzerwilly wrote: »Does anyone know of a campaign to get the banks to remove this facility from cards when requested? A lot of replies, so let's answer some.
I am NOT advocating going back to the cave. All I want is a CHOICE to have contactless or not. Others would have the same choice and I don't mind if the default is to have it and apply if you don't want it!
The reason I couldn't use online banking is because the bank require use of the card into a portable reader and I have had the card blocked to prevent further fraud.
I now have a new card and I'm able to access online banking again, but it was outright inconvenient for the short time it wasn't available.
I did try using my mobile app to access online banking, but that would not work either. The bank's mechanism obviously blocked that route as well.
If it was the bank's responsibility to re-imburse me, they have done so. This could be the interpretation of a call centre operative, so may have been wrong, but having spoken to their fraud prevention team, the answer was the same - you have to wait for the new card and for the amounts to appear on your statement, then dispute the transactions. Despite having had all of the details read to me over the phone, they do not appear on my account, so I presume that the bank beat me to it and simply removed the charges.
Being picky over wording is not helpful! The reason I said I was TEMPORARILY defrauded is quite valid. According to the bank, transactions had taken place using my card details and my account debited - my account down by £25 - definite fraud taken place. Money refunded by bank - my account restored to 'normal', result of fraud negated as far as cash is concerned. Temporary loss of money now removed!
More than one transaction before the fraud was noticed by the bank and the card blocked. No concrete proof that it was contactless fraud, but the pattern and amounts indicate it to be almost certain. There's no other way, unless thieves have found a way to randomly generate details onto a bogus card that would satisfy a contactless machine. If they had the entire details and PIN, I would expect any thief to have emptied my bank account.0 -
Sometimes fraudsters will try taking small amounts first to see if its noticed and then would return for large amounts if not noticed. Does not necessarily mean it is contactless that had caused you to lose money but your own vigilance that might have saved you from greater loses.0

I'm not advocating removal of the facility entirely. I want a choice. You can have it, I don't want it - customer CHOICE.0 -
