Gosh, this would have been so much better on the ebay forum.

Firstly, assuming this was a paypal payment for named goods (if you paid fees on it then it was) buyer merely has to open a SNAD claim and will almost certainly win.

All this nonsesne about photograhing things and taking details of dates is a red herring, this could go badly for the OP and OP seriously needs to cut their losses now and get out of this with as little loss as possible.

If buyer has sent it back tracked to the OP then the OP would be foolish to return it again and pay even more outward postage.

If buyer decides to bypass paypal and go to court that will again cause the OP issues- even if they win at that point.

If however paypal payment was received without any fees then it was a gift payment which means buyer has no rights under paypal so would have to go to court.

Soo is 100% correct here. If he's paid by Paypal and its a 'goods' transaction he holds all the cards.
Returning it at this stage is a very bad idea. You could end up £500 AND the player down.

But is the ebay issue not a red herring here. The buyer purchased off ebay and then returned it and had a refund. End of that story.

You are right that Ebay are no longer involved, however Paypal still offer buyer protection for any purchases, so the person who bought the player from the OP can still claim if the payment was marked as "goods"

OP, Were there any fees deducted by Paypal on the second payment he sent or did you receive the whole amount?

OP the answer to the question of whether you paid fees on the 2nd transaction is of utmost importance. The type of paypal payment made is absolutely crucial to the answer, and not knowing how payment was made means a lot of the answers are merely speculative.

Assuming the paypal payment is secure I'd be tempted to make a video of the working unit complete with interspersed screen shots showing the email exchanges and stick the whole thing on YouTube

PayPal's disputes system is pretty weighted in favour of a buyer of goods, as others have stated. It isn't like a bank chargeback where evidence has to be more robust. OP needs to know what kind of PayPal payment was made.

If everything the OP says is true, then the buyer is probably being a tad unreasonable. I guess the only problem is that OP offered a refund if the buyer returned the item, not (as far as I can remember without scrolling again) if the buyer returned the item and it turned out to be faulty.

Don't refund till you have the item in your possession.

    Then refund him.

He sounds loopy and you don't want to be 'in debt' to loopy people who know your address
