I can't be getting full CTC.
I was getting CTC for 3 children, 4 weekly.
I divided that amount by 4 to get the weekly amount, then divide by 3 to get each childs amount.
That came to £43 each child each week (cant recall the pence)0 -

The amount for the eldest child is £20.30 per week, which is where I got the total of over £70 from.0 -
The amount for the eldest child is £20.30 per week, which is where I got the total of over £70 from.
I still get £20.30 plus £13.40 for two qualifying children.
the higher amount of CB drops to the next child.
I lost £13.40 in child benefit, my CTC drops by £43.
So in terms of hard cash I'm down by £56 per week, I orginally said i was down £73 as in addition to the above our share of the rent has increased by £17.
so IF son doesn't give me anything, then I need to find £73 to cover the shortfall. But as dunroamin points out as son is giving me £50 I only need to find £23, which by juggling I can :T so shortfall not as bad as I orginally feared.0 -

Not right, I'm afraid. Well, it is right in the sense it is the amount you get per child per week, but it is not the amount you are going to lose unfortunately.
Child tax credits are £52 a week per child, plus around £10 a week family tax credit. To work out how much you get you add together all your child, family and working tax credits then subtract a taper which depends on your income. The taper will stay the same if your income stays the same, but your total entitlement will go down by the amount for one child.
The end result is, if one child leaves education you lose £52 a week - not one third of the total tax credits.0 -
Can you tell me where exactly I asked the state to continue supporting him?
I was just shocked at how the figures worked out.
In the past when OH gets a pay rise, we KNOW that it will have a knock on effect on our housing benefit claim. We lose 65% of it striaghtaway, we then lose a bit a more for our CT Claim.
But despite this we still are better off by a couple of pounds.
Think last time OH got a rise and our claims were adjusted we was £3 better off per week. Not a huge amount, but still better off.
I thought with son going to work it would be the similar, but due to the way the figures worked out it is not even vaguely similar. We dont even break even.
I always knew the benefits would stop one day I didn't and dont think it's a bottomless pit.
but being on such a tight budget the figures made me whince and I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.
I don't get what you mean when you say you don't break even. Going back to your original post, it would seem that as a household, you are better off financially. From your original post, you calculated monies paid directly to you would drop by £73, more than covered by the increase in the household income of just over £100.0 -

really???? oh wow then I give up trying to calculate where exactly we will be when it all works out.
I honestly thought I'd lose a 1/3 of CTC (dont get wtc)
Relevant depts have been notified and am just awaiting a letter from his employer that the council has requested.
it'll all come out in the wash I guess? my tax credit renewal was done in about a week so hopefully wont have too long to wait to find out.0 -

You've said your OH works full time, so you do qualify for WTC, it's just that your income is high enough for them to all get tapered off and also a bit of your CTC too (hence why you are getting less than the maximum amount). The taper due to income is removed first from WTC then CTC then the Family element.
It's all explained here:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/payments-entitlement/entitlement/how-worked-out.htm
"The 'elements' you're entitled to for a year are all added together and are then reduced if your gross income (before tax and National Insurance is taken off) goes above a certain level. The higher your income, the lower your tax credit payments will be."0
