Not according to this link.
drive up rate for up to 24 hours in the long stay is £25.
So not a rip off
That £25 per day rate starts at midnight tonight.(from 00:01 18 June 2013)
The drive-up price is:
Up to 24 hours £25.00
Up until a few hours ago, the drive up rate was still showing as £16 per day which is what the OP should have been charged.

OP: Why did you park for a short stay in the long stay car park?
Up until a couple of months ago, I used to fly from Gatwick to Aberdeen, departing early morning and returning in the evening.
If I parked in the short term carpark it would have cost around £30 for the day but only about £11 in the long term parking.
There is generally a fairly hefty premium for the short term parking for a number of reasons,
It's normally within a couple of minutes walking distance from the terminals,
It's usually covered,
The operators can get away with charging a fairly high hourly rate as they know that people will generally pay it and not too many people would stay more than an hour or two so won't be paying a large amount.0 -
really they should re-name parking to
close
further away
even further away
the length of stay in any of the car parks is irrelevant really you are merely paying a premium for being closer to the airport.
Oh and when i drove past the long stay (even further away) in the wee small hours of today im sure the tariff was still displayed prior to going through the gates so if you dont like it dont park there, simple reallyLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
I guess this explains it:

It does appear that the price will be rising at some point in the future.
Would suggest people check out flights from Southend on Sea instead they are adding new destinations on a regular basis. Thompson and First Choice are operating from there next year
