I live near Warminster too. :D. That's the thing with it round here. You are near a lot of places!:D

    And don't I know it.

I notice you've not included Imber in your recommendations? :D

Well, you have to time it JUST right for imber. Another six months for the next chance to visit. The places to stay tend to be draughty and there really is nowhere to eat, and the night life is a little on the wild side. It's definitely worth visiting though. The walking and cycling, even though you have to stick to the tracks is pretty surreal.

Lol, I didn't have to wait to see Imber. I was in it almost every week for 3 years - without sticking to the tracks. Of course I was camping. ;)

In those days I wasn't very litter conscious either and definitely left some quite heavy (and noisy) deposits behind me. ;)

Ah the beauty of life on Sack Hill. :D

Barcelona.......they have an observatory there which charges a very small fee for a midnight talk on the stars that can be seen in the sky that night. Take your own midnight feast (incl a bottle of your favourite wine) and sit outside after the talk and gaze at the stars.........perfect (well I think so anyway) :)

There's always Rome. I never tire of the place. :)

Sadly most weekend couples like the OP get no suck opportunity.

A d the rest of us just get to listen to people like you from off the plain.

@ overseas suggestions, I presumed the suggestions were for uk as not on the overseas holidays board?

It's dangerous on there anyway, unless you know your way around unexploded munitions. Best to stay away. Wish I could've lol. 3 years of the hardest work I've ever done in my life.

OP might be interested in short flights. To be honest it's sometimes cheaper to take a bargain in a European city than to stay in the UK. Food and drink is so expensive here and so cheap there.

For example: the memsahib and I got a weekend in the 5 star Adlon Hotel in Berlin http://www.kempinski.com/en/berlin/hotel-adlon/welcome/ for £350 each, including flights. Food and drink was dirt cheap, and there was so much to see. Of course it was handy that I'd "been camping" there before too.

There was more "camping" going on that weekend than I'd ever seen in Berlin before - it was Gay Pride weekend! :D
  • I thoroughly recommend York.
I enjoy a pint of beer each night for it's health benefits. The other pints are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.

However, we also have spent considerable time in Oxford, (me just as a hanger on, but adh and his siblings both studied there, and we have two Dons in the family) and have family favourite places my in laws have eaten at for decades as well as newer restaurants. These include cuisines that aren't that easy to find outside bigger areas in UK. Just a short drive or taxi ride from Oxford is one of britains most famous restaurants of all. I can agree on the shopping, but I think to say there is no where to eat in Oxford is perhaps a little to do with the ennui of being a local. :)

Meh...Don't get me wrong, I agree that there are quite a few good places to eat *outside* Oxford...but the city itself is pretty lacklustre...In fact, I thought it was widely accepted that Oxford is a bit of a culinary black spot...I can remember several reviews alluding to the fact, like this:

"it must be stated that in some contexts the superlative doesn't cut it. World's Greatest Jewish Sports Star sounds tremendous, for example, until you recall how long it's been since Mark Spitz hung up his goggles. So the bare fact that relative newbie the Magdalen Arms is already widely regarded as Oxford's finest says less about it than it does about a town that would be lucky to scrape a third in culinary achievement."

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/mar/20/magdalen-arms-oxford-restaurant-review

There was a (very positive, actually) review of Sojo on the Guardian once that was rather more scathing about Oxford, too - but I can't seem to find that one anymore... :(

Amazing, isn't it? One persons fun is anothers nightmare!

Chester is nice as is York. Manchester is worth a look. How about Bakewell? Weymouth? Brighton? Warwick? Or somewhere little and quaint like Bourton on the Water?
Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
