It's still England though isn't it? I thought OP was looking for some kind of an adventure away from familiar things, without going out of the UK which is why they were mentioning Scotland and why I suggested Northern Ireland.

Now for us - England would be a break in territory we're not so familiar with. Although both of us have been there many times. I even lived in England for a few years. :)

Really? It's interesting how different people have different perceptions of things...I live local to Oxford and wouldn't recommend it for any of those things! Scenery, architecture, culture etc, sure...but the shopping and restaurants are both famously conspicuous by their absence. Couple of nice bars, I suppose...if you can afford them.

Bath's lovely though, I have to say.

I certainly think Bath is beautiful and I've visited a few times since I left the area in 1982. I love the park by the river. :)

These are probably the hottest two tourist attractions in the UK at the moment:

Another vote for Bath. Beautiful city with lots of shops, bars and restaurants.

I personally wouldn't recommend Cambridge unless you particularly like culture (the colleges). Same probably true for Oxford.

Here's the best hotel chain in Northern Ireland. http://www.hastingshotels.com/special-offers.html?gclid=CNORpv208rcCFQYd3god-TcAOQ

I'd recommend you look at either Ballygally Castle (for the North Coast) or the Everglades for Derry/Londonderry - UK City of Culture 2013 and the last complete example of a medieval walled city in the UK. http://www.derryvisitor.com/

Also in the same area - Portrush. http://www.portrush.org.uk/

    and Dunluce Castle http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/Dunluce-Castle-Medieval-Irish-Castle-on-the-Antrim-Coast-Bushmills-P2819

As well as the world heritage site at the Giant's Causeway.

Here's the ferry deals from Liverpool. http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/special-offers/

The flippin tourist board should be paying me for this lol. ;)
