Good place for a couple to go for a weekend?

Looking to take the Mrs away for a weekend soon & trying to think of somewhere to go. We'd be leaving late on the Friday (from 7pm say) & coming back on the Sunday.

We're fairly central to the UK, so it's about as much travelling to the top of Scotland as it is to the bottom of England for us. It doesn't have to be car (in fact we'd probably prefer train).

The 2 obvious ones to me are unfortunately out of the question:

Edinburgh - we've both been there many many times & just about done it all.
London - been there a few times. Not as much as Edinburgh, but still. Would rather not go there just for a weekend. Find it overpriced & overrated, although going seeing some shows is always nice.

We're both in our 30s. Struggling to think of somewhere to go & what to go & do.

Oh & ignore the Dundee part under my name for Location :)

  • Hi

Since you have mentioned Edinburgh and London, what about visiting Cardiff? Other than that, you could try Stratford, Cheltenham, Shrewsbury, Derbyshire (if you like walking) to name a few!!

Hope you find the perfect place!

    Hi

If you enjoy walking & love country side I reccomend the stunning Caer Berris Manor in Bulith Wells.

My Girlfriend & I stayed there a while ago & the hotel is beautiful & the food is above excellent.

Another vote for Edinburgh. You're halfway there compared to me on the South Coast, too

Sounds like you want a city break rather than a walking or rural one? Central is a big region...some of these might be 'too close' York, Bath, Chester, Stratford on Avon ? Oxford or maybe Cambridge ? Further you might consider Brighton?

Have you ever considered taking a ferry to Northern Ireland? It's small enough to see a goodly portion of it in a weekend or for just settling into a resort town or village and enjoying the food and drink.

    The north coast is spectacular.

I'd suggest Bath or York , with Chester third. All historic cities with lots to see and do, with central railways stations and compact enough to get around on foot.

Another vote for Cardiff - everything central including Bute Park and the castle as well as the new shopping centres and 'lanes' type boutique shops. Plenty of bars, restaurants etc to entertain as well.

    Mostly well priced too.

I could've sworn i replied to this on my break.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. When we go out, it's usually your general touristy things that we do rather than go for big nights out or whatever.

Anyway i'll look into some of these & see what suits us best. Thanks.
