PS3 you may have to pay for using some online games if you buy them 2nd-hand, as I'm new to this someone else might be able to clarify.
how do you buy an online game second hand? do you mean paying to play second hand games on multiplayer? no, i am 99.9% sure you dont pay any charge related to second hand games. they have a thing called playstation plus that you pay for which gives extra content of some sort but you can live without that easily. i do.

Yes I mean paying to play second hand games on multiplayer.

Example the Last of Us has a voucher code for online features, I would assume once used it can't be used again by someone else if they brought the game 2nd hand so would have to buy it from the PSN?

yeah, sometimes they supply codes with new games to access extra features and that code can be used once only. this is to try and hit second hand sales. however the bulk of the game can still be played. voucher codes just gives things like an extra map.

Same with some games from EA and Ubisoft, I say some as ive only had 1 game from each that have had the code inside the box. Its 1 of the reasons why people have stiopped buying EA games.

Im Xbox myself despite having to pay a yearly sub of £30 Im still a fan of it.

OP for first person shoot em up games I've played alot of the COD series and the last Battlefield game. Not sure what more recent games are first person shoot em up games.

In a similar vein, Microsoft's plans for clamping down on the use of second hand games means as a predominantly used games buyer, I won't be purchasing their Xbox One console.

Do you have any friends with consoles? You'll get more enjoyment out of one if you're playing with friends, if that's not of interest to you then the second consideration should be the games you want to play - both platforms have great exclusives.

Xbox 360 Slims are going for around £90 second hand at the moment, which is terrific value.

Basically if games if your thing and your only thing, then get an Xbox. The PS3 is more versatile as a media player, will stream vid direct from PC, play blu-ray, etc. Thats primarily what I use mine for, the games part is simply a bonus to me.

lol! You should hear my 40GB PS3. It's like a hairdryer after 2 minutes. I think the temp sensor is brain damaged.
Probably not the norm for PS3s though.

thought all the PS3 phats had long since gone to the great arcade in the sky... its overheating, and probably on the way out. Mine did the same not long before it died...

its replacement PS3 slim is very quiet.
  • Thank you all for your comments and techie advice.

Bluray and streaming doesnt bother me, I already have a DVD player built into my TV and that does for what I need it for.

Am def thinking about and leaning towards the Xbox, as I have had several friends recommend the Xbox (and one of my closest friends has a selection of games he said he'd let me borrow, lol).

when you are used to the 360 controller the ps3 one doesnt feel right but you can soon get used to it. i know i have.

I had an xbox 360 for 2 years before i traded for PS3. Grew sick of paying to play online and wanted the bluray player... i didnt have a problem with the controller, but i had the original playstation and the ps2 before i got an xbox

Thing is, it's been doing this for over 3 years. It was so noisy I put it in the understairs cupboard and ran a very long HDMI cable to the TV through the wall. I thought it would eventually die, being in that dusty enclosed space, but it's still going, very noisily.
I'll use it until it really does die, then probably get a PS4.
