I have danced between consoles but i think that the Xbox is the better of the current gen consoles. Developers focus on the 360 over the ps3 because if the larger install base (more money) and because of this games like Skyrim and Assassins creed dont play very well on the ps3 as they are poorly ported over from the xbox.

How do you mean 'Assassins creed doesn't play very well on the ps3'? I've played the whole series and they are excellent from start to finish.

To be fair if you want to play Skyrim you should be playing it on the PC, if only so that when you stumble across one of the many game breaking bugs, you'll be able to find a fix online

Same here, I've never had any issues with Assassin's Creed, or Skyrim on the PS3 for that matter!

PS3 actually has the largest installed base worldwide but for UK and USA, XBox is bigger.

Little to choose between the two unless you are talking about games available on only one of them. Publishers tend to produce the same game for both in order to reduce overheads and maximise profit.

If you want to be pedantic about it, the PS3 is slightly more powerful but much harder to push to it's limits and take advantage of the hardware so in reality, unless you're a fan of Sony Specific PS3 titles, you're unlikely to notice a difference.

I'd go PS3 because Microsoft have screwed the independent developers, the very people who allowed them to expand their download base.

I'd vote PS3 due to free online play and bluray drive.

My friend has Xbox and some games he needed on 2 discs PS3 handled on one disc (because of the bluray). Have also heard xbox fans complain that the ps3 controller is "uncomfortable..." but i have used one for 4 years and had no problems...

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Mods please move if desired :)

I have a birthday coming up, and I have been considering selling off my Wii and potentially buying either a PS3 or a Xbox 360.

I used to be an avid gamer but I'm afraid I've gotten out of the loop with it all over the last 2-3 years, so asking for advice....which console is better?

(And yes, I know the new consoles are due out end of the year...that doesnt really concern me!)

    Thanks :A
i would go for ps3. it runs quieter. its free to play online. it plays blu rays. alot of people will tell you the 360 is better but they are living in the past. it was better a few years ago because the ps3 had a slow start. both consoles have plenty of quality games. most games are available on both systems. so you will be happy with either but like i said i would go for ps3.

indeed. there are 2 myths that come from 360 fanboys.
    1. as you mention they say ps3 versions of games are inferior.
    2. online gaming on ps3 is rubbish compared to the 360.

in both cases they are fibbing.

lol! You should hear my 40GB PS3. It's like a hairdryer after 2 minutes. I think the temp sensor is brain damaged.
Probably not the norm for PS3s though.

I have had an Xbox since 2009 and got a PS3 last week, so not particularly biased, most of my gaming is done on the PC though. :)

For you I'd probably edge towards the PS3 as for the price you get a more versatile machine.

The new PS3s 500GB/4GB are pretty much silent, my old Xbox (60GB) is does make a noise and not suitable for watching video. The new Xbox I've been told is a lot quieter.

PS3 gives Blu-ray, free-ish on-line, you may have to pay for using some online games if you buy them 2nd-hand, as I'm new to this someone else might be able to clarify.

Power wise they are pretty similar, the PS3 on paper has a faster CPU and maybe GPU, but it has half the Video ram which pretty much evens things up.
