Xbox vs PS3

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Mods please move if desired :)

I have a birthday coming up, and I have been considering selling off my Wii and potentially buying either a PS3 or a Xbox 360.

I used to be an avid gamer but I'm afraid I've gotten out of the loop with it all over the last 2-3 years, so asking for advice....which console is better?

(And yes, I know the new consoles are due out end of the year...that doesnt really concern me!)

Thanks :A

What games do you intend to play? Are any of them exclusive to one console?

Asking which console is better is a bit like asking whether you should be Catholic or Protestant.

Xbox is an enemy of your freedom.

That's the Xbox One vs PS4 argument. This is Xbox 360 vs PS3.

Xbox any day. Next gen ps3.
  • What games do you intend to play?

I'm more into platform games, and things like Guitar Hero. :rotfl:Basically anything where you have to complete a level to move on, I like the challenge.

Not opposed to new types of games, would rather like to try out these first person shoot em up games that I've heard people raving about for years. Dont expect me to name names, I'm not hip with that lingo!
Are any of them exclusive to one console?

Again, not sure if there any exclusives to one console, as I said, not sure of games specifically being out of the loop.

Interesting that everyone so far I've asked has said Xbox (bar one person). :)

The guitar hero series runs over all three consoles. (same as the other kind, rockband)

http://www.diffen.com/difference/PlayStation_3_vs_Xbox_360 this gives a nice (but a year and a bit outdated) comparison between the two, and shows which games at that point were exclusive to each console.

With all the stuff going on about Xbox one I'd almost wait till that comes out to pick up a second hand deal with games. But then I have a slight distrust with microsoft as to what they're going to do to the 360 to limit it's appeal, and try to "encourage" those to buy the one. Which may be limited to removing some aspects of the 360 like online play.

You might be better looking at a comparison between the 360, and the PS4, although a straight out console comparison would not be comparable, but if you are considering a PS3 to begin with the PS4 would be better, however (my opinion naturally!) The one will not be better than 360 with all the limits put on it, aside the console itself.

Our house has just switched from PS3 slim to Xbox 360 250Gb

Not my decision as its my son that is the gamer but apparently all his mates are switching.

I wasn't to fussed as long as I could get Netflix on the xbox in the same way as on the PS3 - which I can.

As a casual observer I don't see too many differences - wifi built in, hdmi, decent size hard disk, physical size of the unit is similar although the Xbox has a Power 'brick' thing where as it was all built into our PS3 slim.
The picture quality on the TV looks the same - ie very good.

PS3=you can get online, watch Netflix and play for free with no additional purchase
Xbox = Need Xbox live gold subscription at around £32 pa to play online - We got it for games but I think I would have even needed this to watch Netflix too which is a bit of a surprise as Netflix is free on pretty much everything else.

As has already been said, there is a new Xbox One and a new PS4 due out later in the year - they will probably keep the price reasonably high and bundle extras in for the Christmas rush then the prices might gradually drop.

Pre-owned units seem very good value.
I decided to buy one from Game on the high street as it has a 12 month guarantee which looks pretty much the same guarantee as a new one as far as I can see.

    Hope this helps
  • I have both, but the PS3 has some advantages that come to mind - no need to have a subscription to play online and use the online video services, and it has a blu-ray drive (Xbox plays DVDs only). You can get mostly the same games, so unless you're looking to play something specific to the Xbox, I'd go PS3.
  • I have danced between consoles but i think that the Xbox is the better of the current gen consoles. Developers focus on the 360 over the ps3 because if the larger install base (more money) and because of this games like Skyrim and Assassins creed dont play very well on the ps3 as they are poorly ported over from the xbox.

I've found my PS3 to be very versatile. At one stage I was using it as a PVR, with the 'PlayTV' add-on box. I use the Blu Ray player all the time, very good picture quality. The built-in photo viewer app is great.
I also have the Move controllers, which are really excellent. Only problem is the lack of decent games for it. However Sports Champions (1 and 2) are well worth getting.
