Leaseholders share responsibility for upkeep: but no formal structure?

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.
I am going to have to try and make contact with the other leaseholder before making any decisions for sure, as you say, sound them out.
However......katejo's story is interesting. Katejo - the property involved is indeed an E17 Warner Flat!! So infact very similar to your situation indeed. The lease on this one is from when they were still Warner Company freeholds handed down to the existing freeholder/leaseholder, so maybe the same you had?
Your experience is exactly the kind of thing I am concerned about - and the recourse available to resolve any dispute about what needs doing sounds lengthy.
I'm getting very cold feet!
Getting involved in buying the freehold - I would like to do this, but a little further down the line (got q. a bit to be getting on with on the place for starters) - also wouldn't I have to either do that in tandem with the other leaseholder (freeholder willing), or get the other leaseholder's permission to take on the freehold of the whole building if they didn't want to purchase part of it themselves at that time?

So my guess was correct! It really did sound like a familiar description. Which agent is the flat advertised with and in which road is it (if you don't mind saying)? I could have a closer look on Rightmove or similar.
Have you heard of the Warner Leaseholders Association? Their link is http://e17wra.wordpress.com/
I was not involved with them. I only heard of them after selling my flat 7 years ago. They are fighting an extra fee which some freeholders have added to the building insurance as a protection against terrorism damage!!
My flat was ex Warner but I had a new lease produced by the freeholder who had renovated my flat.
I am still living in Walthamstow but now have a small house.0 -
re. leasehold purchasing
I didn't go into this in detail so can't advise. When i had only been there a few months, i was contacted by the solicitor from my purchase. He told me that the freeholder had sold the freehold and asked whether it had been offered to me (as was required). It hadn't so I wrote to express interest. I was given a quote. I showed it to the other leaseholder but she wasn't interested/couldn't afford it. My Dad considered helping me to buy the whole freehold but various obstacles arose including the timing of the offer. Nothing happened in the end. That was way back in 1994.
I didn't pursue it again. i just sold the flat before the lease went down too far.0 -
in therms of sounding out the other leaseholder, even if the other leaseholder is currently very amiable, there's nothing to stop them selling next month and you getting an !!!! of another leaseholder, you'd need to work with. Sounds like far too much hassle for me - I'd personally walk away0
