engagement ring

I know its a bit odd question but how much should it cost comparing to my incomes and what I can afford? Two months wages will be fine?

I think OH's was about 3 months wages, so it should be ok

My only advice (as this is a moneysaving site) is to buy what you can afford :)

I paid £900 for my OH's, not sure what the 2/3 months wage thing is (seems old fashiend to me)

But i let her choose the ring, so she got what she wanted

Wish mine had let me choose the ring. My OH brought me the same one as my Ex even though I showed him which one it was (as its quite a common one and I had this feeling he would bloody pick it lol + knew he would go to that shop)

    *smacks head* men lol

There is no "rule" and you should spend what you can afford.
  • My engagement ring cost a little over £100, and I wouldn't have had anything else. I chose the one that I wanted, which was the best thing possible for me.

    ^^^^^ This.

For best value, avoid places like H Samuels and try Hatton Garden or Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham (depending on your location) or maybe consider 2nd hand.

I had a 2nd hand diamond solitaire, my husband-to-be wasn't too keen on the idea but I got a much better & bigger diamond for the money and loved the ring.

I spent about 900 on my wifes, i had if made bespoke by a diamond merchant in hatton garden. That was about half a months salary at the time

Same ring retails for about 3k on the high street. The ring is heavy platinum and 1 carat of the clearest diamonds to the naked eye. Its impressive

    Do your research before buying

Spend what you can afford. Since getting engaged two months ago, we have found that the engagement ring is one of those 'one up man-ship' areas

Mine is more of a dress ring, less than £100 and DH did say I could change it if I wanted but he'd done the most amazing proposal, whisking me off on a surprise holiday to Switzerland and popped the question at the top of a mountain. So yes I did get a rock on my birthday, it happened to be the Eiger. And no way would I change the ring - it's all tied up in the most amazing thoughtful romantic gesture. That's worth more than any price tag as far as I'm concerned
