I know its a bit odd question but how much should it cost comparing to my incomes and what I can afford? Two months wages will be fine?

I think OH's was about 3 months wages, so it should be ok
My only advice (as this is a moneysaving site) is to buy what you can afford

H Samuels or whatever thier called let you pay over space of a year, just need a 10% deposit..interest free I *belive*People don't know what they want until you show them.0

I paid £900 for my OH's, not sure what the 2/3 months wage thing is (seems old fashiend to me)
But i let her choose the ring, so she got what she wanted0 -
Wish mine had let me choose the ring. My OH brought me the same one as my Ex even though I showed him which one it was (as its quite a common one and I had this feeling he would bloody pick it lol + knew he would go to that shop)

There is no "rule" and you should spend what you can afford.0

My engagement ring cost a little over £100, and I wouldn't have had anything else. I chose the one that I wanted, which was the best thing possible for me.Ninja Saving Turtle0

^^^^^ This.
For best value, avoid places like H Samuels and try Hatton Garden or Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham (depending on your location) or maybe consider 2nd hand.
I had a 2nd hand diamond solitaire, my husband-to-be wasn't too keen on the idea but I got a much better & bigger diamond for the money and loved the ring.0 -
I spent about 900 on my wifes, i had if made bespoke by a diamond merchant in hatton garden. That was about half a months salary at the time
Same ring retails for about 3k on the high street. The ring is heavy platinum and 1 carat of the clearest diamonds to the naked eye. Its impressive
Do your research before buying0 -
Spend what you can afford. Since getting engaged two months ago, we have found that the engagement ring is one of those 'one up man-ship' areasThe opposite of what you know...is also true0

Mine is more of a dress ring, less than £100 and DH did say I could change it if I wanted but he'd done the most amazing proposal, whisking me off on a surprise holiday to Switzerland and popped the question at the top of a mountain. So yes I did get a rock on my birthday, it happened to be the Eiger. And no way would I change the ring - it's all tied up in the most amazing thoughtful romantic gesture. That's worth more than any price tag as far as I'm concerned0
