Anyone got a new over-rider number / landline access numbers for calling 0844 numbers via mobiles - 18185.co.uk / 1899 etc still don't include 0844 numbers - still unsure why.
Regionaltelecom.co.uk used to but not sure if they do anymore as the website is missing all the phone saving pages

anyone found any new over-riders for 0844's ?

I have used WeQ4U. They have an iphone or android app, or you can call them direct on 0333 5432111. Simple to use, just uses your minutes bundle. If in a queue, just press 9* and they queue for you (q4u), and ring back when slot available. Seems to work for me so far.

Another vote for that one as well, although when I tried the option for it to queue for me, the call was answered before it kicked in so there was a bit of confusion while i tried to work out what was going on!

weq4u looks to be the swapping the high rate 08 numbers for a matched databse of local rate numbers like say no to 0870 does - this is good for most numbers related to big companies that usually have alternatives for people calling from outside uk but not all high rate numbers have landline alternatives.
definately will give weq4u a go but still on the hunt for a proper local rate access number that can call any 0844 number + all the others - anyone any idea why 18185 doesn't?

    any more suggestions anyone ??
  • Another vote for weq4u; superb app and should be way more popular. The no charge to your allowance for queuing feature is a real winner. Saved me a fortune.

www.localphone.com prepaid a/c offers access via geographical number . Put the 0844 number in How Much Does It Cost in intl format to get an idea of the cost, easier then trying to work it out from rate table.

The problem with 0844 numbers is that they are not all charged at the same rate. Also saynoto0870.com has far fewer alternatives for 0844 numbers than for 0845/0870/0800 numbers.

This means that it is virtually impossible for the likes of 18185 to offer a reasonable solution.

When I see an 0844 number without a landline alternative, I see the words 'rip' and 'off' and go elsewhere.
  • Fortunately 0844 are being replaced by lots of companies due to new guidelines from the Gov - my doctor is returning to a normal geographic phone number from 0844, some are moving to a similar 03 number...

The way prices are displayed could also be changing so you see for a number how much you get charged by your phone company and the remote company for calling an 0844 number.

I agree these numbers are expensive but that's why they are hard to bypass, there is no money to be made in patching calls to an 0844 number so app companies etc have focused on finding alternative numbers instead.
