Gf dropped her iphone 4, and now it has a black screen and if you press either the on/off button, or the button at the bottom the screen goes all stripey lines, any idea whats up with it or how can get it fixed (if its possible)

Thanks in advance

    You must be joking.

If it's not damaged Apple shop will swap it for £150ish or possibly even for free if it's under warranty.

Alternatively, if it's not under warranty, you can try any independent repair shop.

    thanks grumbler

It wasn't backed up (I know, I know - ive moaned at her already), do you know if everything on it can be saved or recovered?

I know not easy for you to answer without seeing it, just wasn't sure if its possible?

    Thanks again

Sounds like the lcd + digitiser has gone, you should still be able to back it up by plugging the usb cable in and backup via iTunes.

I'd charge roughly £70 for the cost of new lcd+digitiser including fitting

    That's expensive!

I've used Sebs Repair Services in the past (and recommended him to 2 others), faultless service and 1 day turnaround for £36.50.

    Really?

Since the genuine iphone 4 lcd+digitiser unit is around £40 trade then add in an hour or part thereof, I dont think its that expensive. Thats also assuming there is no other damage.

But then I just repair phones for fun, not for business.

I used to employ people like you then ;) I sold the majority share in my shops when the bottom fell out of the market, now I actually do do it just for fun ;).

It's cheaper to subcontract these days, and if you are paying £40 each for wholesale trade screens you need to find a new supplier.

Even retail for single screens, they can be sourced cheaper than that.

By the way, there are UK repairers doing it even cheaper on eBay, so the price I linked to isn't the cheapest, just one I would recommend (after seeing his work on 5 or 6 phones and getting feedback from others who I referred to him), there are sub-£30 eBay dealers including RMSD for returning the phone.

Just thought, will i need to enter the passcode on the phone to allow a back up to be done by my laptop?

Yes, you would (which might be a problem if the screen isn't working).

Though if the phone can be repaired you won't need to back up as replacing the screen doesn't do anything to the software.
