Gobsh1tes on Public Transport

Options
I had a Victor Meldrew moment yesterday.

On a 30 minute bus journey when a young(ish) lady decided to ring Paypal with a non delivery report regarding some shoes.

She then proceeded to tell the woman in front all about the call.

Now she was gobbing on at about 104 decibels for the entire ride, so loud in fact that all other conversations were totally drowned.

Now myself and twenty four other travellers have discovered that this young(ish) lady …

1) May have a thieving partner although he has been away for the last two days.
2) Would never consider wearing any casual footwear except genuine Crocs. Today must have been a religious festival since she was wearing straw sandals.
3) Regards the local Post Office clerk as being a bit “iffy”
4) May have a touch of gout on her big toe – that's why she ordered extra wide fitting (Probably explains the sandals)
5) Has her own version of the phonetic alphabet “A for Audrey, X for xylophone”
6) Was educated at a private school in the Home Counties near Bury St Edmunds
7) Will not be at home tomorrow and can’t leave her mobile number “because other people may hear it”

Her voice was still ringing in my ears at midnight

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I feel your pain...

As a regular train user I am always amazed that people don't seem to realise they can be overheard... from the so called "professional" that lets everyone know about his clients to the girl sharing tales of her boyfriend's latest failings.

... and don't get me started on the "I'm just on the 18:12 so I'll be home in xxxxx".

What the heck did everyone do before mobiles?

    You got off lightly!
My last few bus journey's have included
-little boys who think they're "hardcore gangsters" talking about drink, drugs and "gash".
-one girl describing herself giving birth in graphic detail, including projectile pooing on the midwife.
-one girl on the phone to her friend talking about her recent conquests
-one woman, smelling of fish, standing at the front of the bus preaching about Jesus and covering the first 3 lots of seats in spit.

Sometimes, I think it might be better for my sanity if I just got a car!

Some people seem to have a faulty volume dial! My partner is sometimes guilty of this and I remind him that I am right next to him so he doesn't need to speak so loudly!

Transport companies should take responsibility for the well-being of their passengers and eject anyone who behaves in an anti-social manner. This includes all sorts of behaviours, including loud telephone conversations, pushing in front of people in the queue at bus stops and bags on seats on busy services.

A policy of three strikes followed by a public transport ban would be welcomed! If they want to get to the job centre once a fortnight they can walk for all I care.

    I'm the complete opposite.
If I'm on a bus with my partner he constantly moans that he can't hear me. I talk at my normal volume because I don't want everyone to hear me.

Some of the loud people are really fun to listen to but some (like the 'gangsta' wannabees) need a good slap!

The ones that drive me nuts are the ones that let the kids sit at the back and mum at the front and they're shouting and bawling at each other.

Then you've got the " I don't know what, soaps for" brigade.

And don't get me started on about the ones that sit in the first seat, blocking the window seat and seem hell bent on ignoring you trying to get a seat!

I used to go to work on the bus every day, regular thing was some loudmouth who thinks the whole bus is interested in their social diary for the next month. "TONIGHT I'M GOING TO MANDY'S, TOMORROW I'M GOING TO THE PICTURES WITH MARK AND STEPH, FRIDAY I'M OUT WITH RICK, SATURDAY I'M GOING TO TANYA'S PARTY, IT'S GOING TO BE A CRAZY NIGHT" etc etc.

Once there were a group of lads who'd probably had an afternoon down the pub sat near such a woman, after she'd hung up one of them said to one of his mates "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TONIGHT", to which his mate replied WELL TONIGHT I'M REARRANGING MY SOCK DRAWER, TOMORROW I'M CUTTING MY TOENAILS, FRIDAY I'M GETTING A HAMSTER, SATURDAY I'M GETTING SOME SELLOTAPE..." and it went downhill from there!! The whole bus was wetting themselves, except the loudmouth woman who went very red :rotfl:

The other day on my bus there were a gang of teenage girls, having a stand-up drag-out row. They were all yelling over each other at the top of their lungs like a gaggle of fishwives. Apparently one of them had eaten something and walked off expecting the others to pay. It sounded incredibly petty and lasted the entire journey.

I was on a train once heading to Birmingham.

There was a guy on the train, in a suit, tie, with a laptop on the table having an extremely loud conversation on his phone about some mega deal he appeared to be closing. From the way he was carrying on this was clearly some extremely important, multi-million pound thing... I couldn't imagine exactly what it was that he was involved in but we all heard - primarily because he wanted us to hear.

But then, during the middle of his conversation, as he was getting more excited and loud about how he was closing this deal, we also all heard the phone he was speaking on ring in his ear.

Moral of the story - when your self-esteem is so low that you have to pretend to be a big businessman on a train full of strangers, make sure to put your phone on silent.

As some one guilty of this one, I have to jump to my defence and put an alternative viewpoint that I think this (and ordering a taxi) is the ONLY justified use of a mobile phone on a train.

I do it so my other half knows when he needs to be at the station the other end to pick me up. And it's only when I'm actually on the train that I can really be confident to tell him when this is likely to be. As far as I'm concerned any other inconsequential chit chat / business talk etc can wait until peope reach their destination.

When I used to do the journey before mobiles it was a right pain. I had to aim for one specific train each and every day so my other half would have an agreed time in advance to pick me up at the other end. If I got to the station and found that the train was delayed or cancelled it would cost a minimum 40p to use the station payphone to tell him I'd be late and that he should set out later . If the train got delayed at signals etc en route, he'd just have to sit fuming at the other end wondering where I'd got to.

I don't use my mobile very much but if you use public transport and rely on getting a lift or having a taxi ordered at the other end it's a godsend.
