If I transfer from one provider's monthly to another's PAYG (eg Orange Monthly to O2 PAYG, how long do I have to keep the number with O2 befor I an port it again?

You can keep it as long as you like on o2 because it's on PAYG. In fact a day after porting has been completed is fine. The only time you can't port mobile numbers is if you are still within your minimum term contract. None of the 4 networks (not sure about 3) charge for giving you a PAC code although they can charge an admin fee if they wanted. I believe it's only some service providers like Singlepoint that charge.

I've just arranged for my old Virgin PAYG number to be ported to my new o2 sim. But I've also got an unused Vodafone sim which has a much easier to remember number than either the Virgin or the o2, and now I wanna port that instead!
After the switch from o2 no. to virgin no., would I be able to use my Vodafone sim and then ask for the PAC code from them and ask o2 to port it again?!
Or is that not allowed?!

If you've changed your mind about porting contact customer services and cancel it. Not sure which c/service you would need to ring but I would cancel it with both customer services so you know for sure. You should be able to cancel the porting process upto the day of transfer (the sooner you cancel the better).

Then ask Voda for a PAC code (their number is 08080 945 945) and port your Voda number to the o2 sim (thereby keeping your voda number and losing the o2 number).

If its too late and they can't cancel the current port process then yes just wait until porting is completed and ring Voda for a PAC and then port this to the o2 sim (which at this point would have your virgin number on it).

Does this make sense?

One bit I am not clear on is I have just given 30 days notice on two phone contracts with Orange as I am in my 11th month. I have asked them to make the numbers PAYG so I can keep them. I am looking for 2 new contracts and may stay with Orange. Can I ask them to transfer my old numbers (which will then be on PAYG) back to my new contract?

Yes you can. If you are thinking of getting another new contract after your current one ends (and they were trying to say you have to upgrade and pay a upgrade fee) is to speak with their cancellation dept (retentions) and ask for your PAC code as you wish to leave to o2 (or any network for that matter) and they'll prob give you the phone your after and the tariff your after without a upgrade fee.

I know this as a few people I know have managed to do this and also MSE Martin has done this himself (see this thread).

I took out a cash back deal from Chatterbox.com last year. I had 100xnet and 100 text per month on each line for which I pay orange £25 per month for each line (total £50). I then received £454 cash back from chatterbox which meant I only paid £150 for both the phones for 12 months. I am looking for a similar deal again this year so I don't want orange to try and keep me as they could never match that.

I agree then just ask them to port the numbers to PAYG as you mentioned.

You would have to ask whichever company you were thinking of going with if you could port your orange PAYG numbers to the new contracts.

I'm not to sure how cashback companies worth with regards to them checking that you still have the phone/contract and haven't downgraded package.

For example, if you got a new contract with new number and then just asked orange to port your PAYG number to the contract one they would of course say yes but you may have problem with regards to the company that is doing the cashback as they may approach Orange and ask them if such a number (the number that was originally supplied with the contract) is still connected and whether or not they've downgraded. If you port the number over via Orange without the cashback company's knowledge when they approach Orange, would orange not say "sorry no record of that number" as you would have your PAYG number now instead?

Does that make sense at all?

Yes it does. I know when I took out the last cashback contract I could port numbers so long as they weren't from Orange as the new contract was with Orange. I did port the T mobile number over and had my cashback no problems. I will check this out though as I may use a different company this time.
