    morning all,

nice to see you back Rozee, I can see you are busy by your post on FB..

couldn't face going into work today... the pressure an stress are getting over baring now..

One thing I want to point out to lurkers, daydreaming about when they get their own place... the pressures of running your own business, or even the pressure of potential redudancies once you have bought your place.. is a huge strain...

its hard... bloody hard... as I think a certain generation who got brought up watching 'the good life' and with the surge in self sufficiency books etc.. get this daydream image that the sun is always shining, the crops grow in abundance, and everything is rosey etc... they never mention money, horrible neighbours.. regulations.. licenses etc lol.. and the potential land tax..in the future that we have talked about on the thread a while back

would I change it???? no... but I do need to treat the ranch as a business.. so it can generate some sort of income, or matter how small... which I always said I would try and do,

Sorry for this type of post again..lol..

right cuppa time....and carry on watching the birds on the tree right by the caravan window... bliss...

We're living in the house while it happens money.

The main problem with a big project is it takes longer. If one could afford to do it in one hit you'd find there were cost implications of living in I it because it slows things down, labour time is more expensive than camping often.

We're lucky in that phase one here ( not complete but structurally complete) could be tackled separately. Its around a third of existing floor space and was the kitchen and out door loo.

We blocked doors into it and moved kitchen in to another room( previously study, currently dumping ground , to be half of dining room and had the temporary kitchen temporarily plumbed with cold water only) .

The problem we have is order of works. Do we finish phase one to finished standard now? Or press on and tackle finish in one hit?

I see advantages to both. :)
Hehe, we are living in a parallel universe now, LIR!

We have the same quandary. We've decided definately to leave the loft space for when we need it and stick to downstairs. But do we finish the new work, which would mean the extension would be a living and eating space which we could enjoy in the warm months almost immediately, or do we decorate the bedrooms and start sleeping in the house.... But second fix electrics and plumbing must come before that in any case! And painting the walls before that!!

I sometimes think that if we could have afforded to do it in one hit, we probably would have been able to buy an entirely different house with an entirely differnt budget! We do, however, have a house that is pretty perfect for our family's needs this way though. You could never buy the perfect house off-the-shelf for you, I suspect, whatever the budget. Some adaptations are always going to be needed or desired.
  • Definitely a good point re "The Good Life". I remember watching that series. The 1970s back to the land info. does tend to gloss a bit (a lot) over potential pitfalls. The first and foremost one, I am inclined to think, being the weather might well be different to what you are used to (assuming you are moving to a different area).

I think that is one of the things that honestly doesn't strike you. If you live in an area of the country with what I call "normal" weather, then you think "It's cold up north and even colder in Scotland and Scotland has midges" and that's about as far as your thinking goes. For the rest, it can be easy to assume that if it aint "up North" then it aint gonna be any different to your "normal" weather (or possibly just a little bit more rain).:cool::cool:

This maybe doesn't matter that much to someone of a happy/cheery nature (is there anyone much like that?) or of an absolutely pragmatic and that's it nature. For someone who is at all prone to low moods on the other hand.....and has learnt to rely on frequent good weather to help lift said moods.... and is not going to be happy at making decisions to do gardening/going for a walk and finding the weather has a habit of changing their mind for them.

I knew I didn't want to go too far north, even within this southern region as I feel the cold due to one of my heal conditions. Stow on the wold where the the wind blows cold....southerly but pockets of cold in it still.

We have ended up in a cold pocket, but we get less rain in the wettest side of the island due to local topography,

Even which valley side of a hill you buy can make a difference. Our last home was on top of a hill, very windy, but also, warm.

I think remembering that there is only so much we can control is vital for sanity!

I am normally a hundred mile an hour person when I am stressed, it used to drive me, if that makes sense... I have always had stress in my life... and normally deal with it ok, I do have meltdown/burnout moments, but after a few hours I am fine, but over the last year or so... Its just driven to a lifeless wreck... I can go from stressed to depressed in .01 of a second..lol.

Yesturday in work.. I ended nearly fainting and being sick.. today... I just cant face work...

I totally need to change my lifestyle/work, but the pressure of doing that is emense, as hubby and eldest work there too... along with other staff..

as for the weather, I think over recent years, it doesn't matter what part of the country you live in, its been utter pants...

I am hoping that I can make a bit of pocket money from plants, and test the market locally with quails eggs (FK if any of your 'posh places ' would like quails eggs let me know).. which will be housed in the other end of the huge brick building we are clearing out and re-roofing..

with the amount of foxes etc around here.. not many people can keep chickens long ( so the neighbours say) free range etc.. so with the quail being indoors, in large cages.. with heat and light, they should have a good secure home, and fingers crossed lay most of the year...

The 12 females we have are not laying yet, but shouldn't be too long..

CTC, please, please see your doctor.

If nothing else the chemical impact of too much stress in your system for too long can have real, physical impact.

You might not be able to stop what you are doing now but you DO need to have a investigation in to whether these physical manifestations are 'just' stress.

I have an appointment on Monday so they can 'wire me up' to a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours..( go back on Tuesday to have it taken off) I even got to take my own AA batteries lol

I am almost certain I am going through the 'change' as I have not had a monthly for at least 3 months...

I know this sounds silly, but when I am at the dr's I don't feel bad or ill, and feel like a fraud.. I am also very good at hiding things and putting 'a face on ' so to speak..

But it is getting to the point where I really do need help.. ( not easy to admit) so Monday I am going to mention it, or make another appointment to speak to someone..

Trust your own body, CTC. I am a person that most people who "know" me think I'm pretty robust, but I just conceal my stress very well. I'm sure if I hadn't left my law firm when I did, I would have had some sort of breakdown and I know of those that have done just that. Ot they manage it with alcohol, or other distractions. When you don't hear from me for weeks, part of it is the struggle of keeping going. It's hard this Good Life, smallholding thing... You don't have to put on a brave face here xxx
