BD....... do you have buzzards where you are ? id be surprised if the chook did what in effect is a challenge so early into its arrival ? it may have done but , bald, they are more conspicuous than camoflaged with feathers. i think if you supply a biggish box that they can huddle together in rather than seperate they may hold heat ? if you put it up a little to prevent em sitting on the top tho. no perch. the smaller the house they are in the warmer it will be for them... wont be for long...
my ex batt chooks soon feathered up ...0 -
Aw, bad news on the chook, BD
We've lost two out of 20 so far. We acquired 3 more today. Pet quality, young Araucanas. I like blue eggs and the flock of 6 I bought last year were already in their third season, so I went for some younger blood. Good quality Araucanas seem almost impossible to come by. I've joined the club, but no one seems to want to let birds go and hatching eggs were selling on ebay for £26 for 6 plus P&P! I got this trio for £25. Seems a better deal? One of the hens is laying already, the other at POL.
I may even try my hand at selling some hatching eggs.... Has anyone gone down this road?
I've been a bit quiet as we are throughly miserable here and I don't feel I've got much to say apart from moan about builders and cold, wet and mouldy caravans
Having said that, our range arrived today, so that's a bit of cheer.0 -
Hope your bug doesn't develop into anything, lir. Sometimes, it's possible to fight things off before they get a real hold.
I deserve to get something.:o I was caught out this morning clearing the remaining trees and bushes I cut some time ago by the stream. I'd just got them all over the fence and into the field when it bucketed down. As it was mainly blackthorn/hawthorn, I didn't want to leave it there, because I knew those sheep would be into it in 5 minutes and then dragging huge bits around for days!:rotfl:
So I cleared up my mess before going to change, which meant I was very wet for just under an hour.
That was most of the rain we had today, but things are looking difficult for Choille Day on Wednesday. I have loads of stuff piled up to burn; all of it sopping wet .
EDIT: Just read your post, Better Days. What a shame! I'm not convinced the chook went awol of its own accord though, as that would surely go against the nature of the birds.0 -
LIR.... oooooo poorly you ! hope its a glitch and not worse.. xx0

If I were in your friends situation I'd look at rare breeds, because she could do some reall good.
Otherwise, my I favourite sheep of all are castlemilk moorits. Now you know me and sheep, they aren't my favourites, but these, these are part wild thing, part elf. They are swines to handle of course, as a result, but gorgeous.0 -
