Desperately hoping no one comes before alf so that she is our first footer. :)

To start the year we have an electric fence down and horses all in wrong places. They do say what happens to day is an omen for rest of year........
  • good job you didn't go abroad to live... as it sounds as though it would not have worked out for you anyway... the only way it would work, is if you put your property into auction.. and then rent until you decide what exactly what you want...and what you are capable of doing... especially now you are saying your OH has bad arthritis ... Might be worth you trying an allotment for a few years... and maybe going to a riding stable/centre and going on treks etc..

To be honest, we expected him to get worse if we stayed in the UK. It's a two-part condition which he has. He needs the sunshine desperately and we just don't get enough of it here. He has a special lamp but it isn't helping enough, and all this damp and wet makes things worse.

I've tried having an allotment before but I can be quite lazy and a procrastinator, and couldn't get motivated to go down there and do stuff. And it was very overgrown to start with, which didn't help - it was all too easy to get discouraged, trying to do it by myself. I'll see what I can do with the garden this year.

One thing I *have* learned is that I couldn't deal with a detached garden space. If it's not right next to the house, it won't work for me! :rotfl:

Here's to a productive and contented 2014 for all of us  Happy New Year!

To be truthfully blunt then, with this post you done, then maybe the smallholding, and the horses that you wanted..is not for you.

Also sounds as though you are in a catch 22 then, ideally you should live in sunnier climates, so by the sounds of it you need to sell your house ( don't know how much cash you would come out of it with) and move abroad, BUT then you will need to work when you are abroad...

OR you just save like crazy and try and do a few long weekend breaks abroad.. throughout the year... so he can at least have some sort of relief from the arthritis, If it was me, this sounds like the most realistic option... and just make full use of your garden for growing etc...

Anyway.... HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone... well if the start of the new year got anything to go by, I am POOPED.... youngest came home at 12.05am.. in a stonker of a mood, so upset... basically cut a very long short he was saying his so called friends were telling him to 'do one' and top himself, and a load of name calling etc... he left the pub at about 9.30 - 10pm and walked home crying his heart out.. Yes my son loves himself etc.. and comes across quite blunt etc, BUT he is such a sensitive sole ( flip all this sounds like me, know's where he gets it form now) and really does take things to heart...

He will not talk to his father, so I was in his room for 2 hours... with him saying to me why don't I talk to him anymore!!!! the little git snubs me, and will not talk to me, ( prob so uncool)

Just been up to his room, and taken him a milkshake up...and a big hug, and promised him a big fry up later...

So I need to keep a close eye on him...

    Weather is pants too...

Alex, my husband has a sun and potential arthritis condition too though no arthritis yet.....psoriasis.

What we find with sun is that we're lucky he is really hardy. One of the reasons its hard to find pictures to post of the Wreckstoration are that he's barely dressed in most of them :). No shame, a decent bod and hardiness means he's able to get max sun exposure for skin.

With arthritis risk being very real but thankfully for him not yet actualised, we approach preemptiveT with diet and the right sort of exercise. For example, DH is a gym bunny, but doesn't jog on roads any more, to avoid too much concussive shock to joints.

One will never get it perfect of course, but we do what we can, :).

The skin is always worse at this sort of time of year, but luckily its been so mild DH has been in t shorts up until really recently. Of course, its worse with stress too. and he's had loads of that in recent years :(.

I have a spice cake in the oven for alf coming. Hope it comes out right. :).

You never know, the psoriasis might be something he grows out of. I had it as a young man, and you're right about the stress and cold, but it cleared-up as I aged. :)

Mine was confined to my hands, so never a worst case example, but it was still a damned nuisance, especially doing practical work or anything involving handling water.

DH only got it in his late teens. He cannot quite remember if it was before his mother died (i.e. stress of school leaving exams /university starting or just after. ( stress of bereavement). It waxes and wanes a little but is always there.

He has some artificial sun treatment/ light therapy but you only get three hundred hours in your life and is careful not to use too many of those now that he might need more of later.

He saw the doctor about it in November and the go said, 'honestly? I think you'd do better if I signed you off for two weeks, and you got a decent break from work, maybe a holiday. ' its true.

I am willing my brain to improve to the point I am allowed to fly this year so DH can get a break somewhere warm.
  • I feel guilty now LIR, as when Alfie comes down to the ranch, its always shop bought crap. I got in.lol

Yeah, but you have a shop as your pantry. :)

I bake because its what I do. I then have palpitations it won't work and I'm not got time to sort anything else out, lol.:rotfl:

House is a tip, garden a swamp.

I usually like winter, but I've had a couple of grotty ones and I really might be becoming more of a summer person.

I'd be thrilled if it were May tomorrow.
