Lir, wouldn't a free-standing straw bale wall cost more than a panel fence by the time you've protected it and added the strengthening it would need to withstand winds?

Jacksons do fences higher than 2m. They're almost local to you. :)

    :

Yes, more expensive, but maybe nicer? We put a panel fence (but with wooden posts in) when we moved in. It was a 28 day clause :eek: (we missed the deadline but they let it go) the posts are concreted, but three posts snapped in the wind the other week. DH can't get to it, and we are on the end of a list of people wanting fencing repairs. :(

Its just a pain. Today they flopped over again ( DH put in posts but not concreted) and so back garden is verboten for dogs unattended. I have one dog in season, one about to come in season, and no where I can chuck the girls or the boy to separate ten minutes unattended, its not impossible but it is tedious!
Fence originally was a mash of junk, a few flopped concrete posts were there, but most was decrepit wire or corrugated iron sheets.

I do love hurdles though. :). And a fence would be better from the POV of planting trees close to it.

I just don't know what to do.

Meanwhile I'm looking at woodburners for the study and DH really liked the Vermont ones. Anyone know anyone who has one of these? I really want something with a cook top, but still wish I could find a tiny little Victorian range for the little space. I did find some where that makes them on line, but ....couldn't se a price......if you have to ask then......:)

Really I just want the fence done so its done, and the stumps put so I can plant trees ! (Stumps in front of fence, so should remove them first....)

There is a place in East Sussex called architectural plants that seems to have a really good range of broad leaf evergreens,.....I want to go there.....

Everything is so dense as it is there is no planting room below surface, we cannot put the space in without hitting roots. I would have thought three years in damp soil would rot soft wood. Good ness knows it would rot anything you left out there!:rotfl:

Mind you, we haven't tried recently......maybe that is the answer......hmmm.
  • Some of our big stumps took years to get rid of :(
That was partly due to the remains of old dry stone walls which were mixed in with the roots & made it impossible to saw or chop easily.
Drilling some large holes (which let the rain & insects in) seemed to help speed the process. Then it was a case of axe, saw, lump hammer, stone chisel & plenty of very hard elbow work :rotfl:
I've also heard some people say they've burnt out the hearts of the stumps when they've weathered down for a couple of years but have never tried that myself.

ahhh ! now thats a good idea...ive done that :D get a big drill and drill a cavity then pop in a firelighter, light it then add a bit of twigs/sawdust/woodshavings. it burns slowly inside out. it doesnt blaze that way.... may be worth a try.

LIR.... that little woodstove ive got is a side loader and has a lift up top for pans etc...... ??
