i have a silk/linen skirt that the lable states is dry clean only - i have always washed it in my machine on a silk wash and taken ages ironing with a cool iron - i have never had a problem- although it is a dark colour.

As it's for a wedding I'd be inclined to have it dry cleaned just this once. I only wash 'dry-clean' stuff that I've already had my moneysworth out of when I won't be too upset if it doesn't work out.

Yes, I agree with Maman. Have it professionally done just this once - after all, you didn't pay full price for it. After that, put it in a cold wash, hang out and iron on the reverse whilst just damp.

I agree with the others. Have it dry cleaned just this once and then try washing it later on when it won't be actually needed for the wedding.

When I worked in the clothing industry the place I worked for put dry clean only labels in everything regardless of whether they could be hand washed or not. There is every chance it will wash perfectly well but wait till after the wedding before you try it.

Sorry if I have chosen the wrong place for this question, but can anyone give advice?

My Mum wants to buy some trousers, but they are dry clean only. Would she be able to wash them in cold water - or is that a no no?

    They are lovely trousers!! :D

often you can get away with it but if they shrink/crinkle up/or just generally die you have no come back from the shop, depends how much they cost whether I'd risk it myself
Go hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last
  • I was given a load of lovely clothes on Friday and have spent the weekend cleaning and ironing them as they have been stored for a long time. How ever have been given some lovely skirts and jackets including pure wool winter coat which are dryclean only, is there any way they can been cleaned with out drycleaning? I dont have a tumble dryer everything is dried either outside or inside, I dont mind hand washing if I can do it this way, just dont want to ruin my new to me walldrobe.

I wouldn't risk washing a coat or tailored jacket, as they have so much padding and inter-facing which can come apart.

Anything else, skirts, trousers, jumpers, etc I wash on a sunny windy day. Very carefully handwash, minimal squeezing and short spin. Rolling in a towel and leaving for about 10 minutes can take much of the wet away. Good luck.

I agree. Jackets and coats are best dry cleaned for the reasons that Pollypenny mentioned.

Skirts and dresses or trousers, I wash gently. I think a delicate wash program is standard now on washing machines.

There is a thread on here somewhere about dry cleaning versus washing.
