re suite covers - I used to do the old linen union suite covers in woolite and same as lil_me, put them on slightly damp. They did, over time, shrink slightly but not much. Depends on what you're fabric is lined with, but I was told not to use fabric softener on them - it affects the fire retardency.

bluedog I would think your cardi would be fine on a delicate/handwash using woolite or similar. The thing that might bother me would be stretching if it's a very heavy material. I would roll it up in a towel to collect excess water. Can you dry if flat, over the bath say?

I was never happy with dry cleaners anyway as things never seemed to come back realy clean.

The first time you handwash something after it's been dry cleaned you realise it really shouldn't be called cleaning

If you are dry-cleaning, make sure you take the stuff out of the cover and hang it up somewhere well ventilated to get rid of the solvent fumes. You really don't want them in your bedroom.

I only dry-clean suits (sadly I have FAR too many) and really delicate things while I'm still feeling guilty about how much they cost me. There usually comes a day when I think 'Sod it' and chuck it in the machine. It's usually fine.

  • Hi

I have a pair of really thick dark red curtains that cover my patio doors, they really need a good clean and I took them down to throw in the machine, one at a time they are that big and heavy! when I checked the label it said dry clean only! would they be ok on a quick wash cycle 30 mins at lowest temperature or would delicate cycle be better???

Don't think the'll shrink too much if I hang them out straight away, the weight should pull them back into shape.

    Any advice greatly received.
    Thanks

If they have a sewn in lining you might find the curtains shrink a little and the lining doesn't leading to puckering at the seams. If they aren't too dirty you could try freshening them up with a good vacuum and then running over with a steamer?

Do you have a bath? I'd wash them in the bath with cool water. It won't pull them out of shape. May be tricky getting them down to the washing line though.
  • Hi

Thanks for the advice Peartree, they are lined with cream fabric, I was worried about the red running but now I'm worried about puckering.

They have a few marks over them at waist height down probably from the childrens mucky hands as the run past into the house!

The bath ideas good, but they would still have loads of water left in them, would that make it worse when i hang them out?

    Thanks

    :)

I washed mine in the machine on a cool wash, no powder, just a bit of baby shampoo. the colour did run into the lining but hey, at least they're clean ;) It just made the lining a nice shade of pink.

I wash all dry clean stuff, including suits, on the handwash setting, low or no spin, and cold fill only, gentle powder, and not much of it. Then I hang it on a hanger and allow to dry in it's own good time.

Downside is, you will need to iron, as the lining will doubtless be as wrinkled as a 90 yr olds bum!
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
  • Thanks for all the help, I thik I'll try them on either the 30 minute wash programme or the delicate cycle, I really can't face struggling with them in the bath!!!!

I'll wait until the weather improves though (its absolutely tiping it down here in south wales today) and let you know how they turn out!

    Thanks again:T :T :T
