    Yes.... and no.

    I disagree on several levels, in certain circumstances: as with most things in life, it is not a simple black/white issue

    * Selecting the right property is arguable the "most important thing in the whole process"
    * Making sure the property is not falling down might turn out to be more important than employing a good conveyancing solicitor

    But addressing your key point:
    * yes, a good conveyancer is important - but that might be you!
    * I have done my own conveyancing successfully, and recommend it to others in appropriate case ie
    - where the buyer/seller has the time, the motivation, the education/literacy/skills
    - where there is no mortgage (as the lender will appoint one anyway)
    - where the potential complexities (lease, covenants etc) do not stretch it beyond the understanding of the DIYer

    The benefits can be
    * sense of satisfaction
    * learning experience - the process
    * learning experience - the property (you learn a lot about the placeyou are buying by not delegating)
    * speed - you are only doing one property. You conveyancer will be juggling 15? 25?
    * and lastly (yes, really) cost saving (this IS a moneysaving site!)

    Having said all that, not everyone (indeed most people) is equipped/competant enough to DIY, and Iwould not encourage anyone to do it unless they were really competant/confidant/skilled enough.
