Hi all,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. Was not sure where to put this?

Last week whilst in work i had a police officer come visit me. I was very surprised so clocked out of work and met him in the reception area.

He told me that he was here to "Collect the Rug Doctor" - We borrowed a rug doctor (Capet Cleaner) last week from Morrison's and i must have forgot about it.

He told me that i MUST return it by the end of the day or he would be back to "Visit Me" he then also was asking me if I had a partner and where she was?

Perplexed and cautious that i need to get back to work i answered his questions, went home later that day, returned to the Rug Doctor and that was the end of it....

1 week later - Sitting at home and my partner whist cooking starts shaking as she can see a flash light shining through the window. I look out and its a Policeman wanting our attention to get the security code to the private gates!

She then all of a sudden opens up and explains what happened last week.

The Police officer came to our property before he visited me in work, he threatened to kick the door down and was pocking some sort of stick through the letter box to rip my mail collector off (small cardboard box i put over the letter box as the dogs chew the mail), my partner was in the shower and was rushing out and scared open the door.

The police officer asked where i was and walked through the house, asking her why she took so long to open the door (my theory is he thought i was hiding) he searched the whole house before asking where the rug doctor was.

He then was asking to see her phone. He then asked if the TV was stolen and in our room i have product boxes such as an Apple Pro Monitor and Sonos Soundbar (which i am given to test as part of my job) he took the serial numbers down encase they where stolen!!

He open cupboards door etc... all while my partner was pregnant and with a towel round her!

I feel disgusted with the Police and the way they have acted towards her and me. And i would like anyone to explain if i have any legal ground as i would like to take this as a complaint!

All over a few days late Rug Docor

Thanks All.

Something doesn't add up here, the police wouldn't get involved in that!

I'd go down to the station and find out what's going on!
  • And this is why the 'real' criminals don't get caught as the plods are out chasing ppl over the late return of a Rug Doctor!

    The mind boggles.

Yet another idiot thinking that wearing a police uniform makes him king of the world.
Firstly, you might wish to speak to Morrison's to find out why they contacted the police rather than you. Bit of a waste of police time IMO.
Secondly, find out where the officer is based and put a complaint in writing to his superior. (Check out your force's website, they should have the information on there. If not, you can ring 101 and ask).
If you're unhappy with the reply/action taken, you can report it to the IPCC. You can also do this without reporting him to his superiors first if you wish.
Write down exactly what happened, and make it perfectly clear that you believe his actions were inappropriate. (FWIW, I'm in total agreement with you, and this man's actions were vile.)
Also, if your other half didn't give him permission to explore the house, make this clear too.
IMO, this is/was a civil issue between you and Morrison's, and the police should not have intervened, and certainly should not have used the intimidating tactics they did.
I would also be asking them to inform you of what laws you were potentially in breach of, what crime they were investigating, and what relevant authority they had to do what they did. As it appears to be a civil case, they may have a hard time justifying themselves.
I hope you get a satisfactory response.

I agree. Civil matter, they should have had no involvement!

    This all sounds very strange.

As monty-doggy says, the police shouldn't have been involved at all.
I would be very surprised to find that this was an officially sanctioned visit.

OP - you must have had an agreement with Morrisons about the return date for the loan of this machine. How many days late was it?

Did Morrisons take your phone number when you borrowed the rug doctor?
If they did, did they try to contact you at any time after the machine was overdue?

How did the police officer know where you worked?
You don't actually say that your partner told him.

Did you get the officer's name or ID number?

Also, how can you borrow a rug doctor machine - presumably for cleaning all or some of your carpets and 'forget' that you haven't returned it a week later?

You don't forget you haven't returned it, you forget when it was supposed to be returned. (Or, top put it more accurately, you don't notice that the deadline for return has passed.)
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

I think you should come clean on this one. Something doesnt add up !
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Was it on eBay?

Or pehaps it was this in the Terms and Conditions that you signed when you hired the machine:-

    Nice link, Sammy.

I wonder who the OP's contract for this loan was actually with?
    Morrisons or some 3rd party?

Looking a the T&Cs in the link provided by Sammy, it might be that the OP's forgetfulness about the date he should have returned the equipment has landed him in a very difficult position with the police.

Assuming the OP signed similar T&Cs, I would have thought that returning the equipment before or on the due date would have been something that he ensured wouldn't slip his mind.

And the OP said he borrowed the Rug Doctor and forgot about it, not that he forgot the date it should have been returned.

Going back to the OP's post, why would a police officer visit someone at his place of work and ask where his partner was.
Does the OP mean he asked for his home adress?
Policeman surely knew that already as the OP says he'd visited his partner at home before then going to his place of work.

If the Rug Doctor had been returned the same day of the police visit, why would a police officer go back to the OP's house a week later?

So what happened on this '2nd visit'?
Did the OP let the policeman in?
    What was said?
    Was it the same person?
  • Something doesn't quite ring true about this. Also the OP seems to have more than his fair share of woes looking at his previous posts.
