In a word. Google Nexus 4. I have been doing loads of research recently as my contract is ending in a few weeks and I am changing to pay as you go (Giffgaff). All my enquiries as to the best phone to get around that price lead to the Nexus 4 16gig. A friend of mine recently bought one and I have had a play with it. A brilliant phone and right on your budget (and mine as well).

I have had a Nexus 4 for about 2 months (after much research :))

To put it in some context I went from iPhone 3GS.

The Nexus 4 is streets ahead and right in your budget - iPhone 5 would be much more for example.
Favourite thing so far is the panoramic / 360' photos.
I used Android on a tablet about two years ago, and have to say current Android is a world apart, so much better.

Only thing that might put me off is the size, it's slightly too big for some situations for one handed operation.

By the way, buying direct from Google is the best way in my opinion, I looked at eBay etc but people were paying more than the Google price for some reason?!

Did you get your sim on a monthly rolling contract. If so then you will be able to change your contract to include a handset, and probably get a better deal.
