I wonder why they would put a cap on the speed when I'm paying for a better package! No wonder the downstream stats were always the same.

Thanks for that link I'll try it out tomorrow.

Okay I've just tried connecting the filter into the master socket as per the above and that alone made no difference. I removed the cover and just plugged it in. I noticed that wires were connected to positions 5, 3 and 2.

The webpage says you only need to have 2 and 5. I'm not very technical when it comes to phones and connections however we have one master socket and two extensions. Won't removing say no.3 kill one of the extensions?

I also downloaded and used a program called TCPOptimizer.exe to tweak the registry entries and that also made no difference at all.

I've just tried these more detailed instructions and we've removed wire no. 3 from all sockets in the house.

However, there is still absolutely no difference to the speed.

As your downstream attenuation is 33dB, you should get the full 8Mbps - you have been put on the base package.

The upstream speed of 416kbps is the same for both the base and mid packages.

This graph shows the downstream attenuation along the bottom along with the likely speed:

You need to get on to Sky and get them to uncap your line.

    Thanks

ok I tried http://www.dslzoneuk.net/distance.php? and it states I am 2.22 Kilometers from the nearest exchnge, what would speed would I expect out 0f that distance???

Additionally, I am currently on 10meg service with Virgin Media and for the past 3 weeks the highest speedtest ratings I am getting is 460kbs d/l and 612kbs u/l.

Virgin Tech support tell me they dont know why its that low. Hence my reasons for looking for an alternative provider.

I called Sky Broadband support and didnt get a very helpful response.

He claimed that there wasnt a a cap on the line. The person I spoke to asked why I wanted a higher speed. Well why not?

I asked if it was possible to get a higher speed. The answer was only if I upgraded to the Max package in which case I'd get about 4Mb - oh whoopee!

So theoretically it was possible but only if I paid more. He said that BT did something called "rambling" which was to test the connection until they find a point where the speed is good without compromising quality.

So really that doesnt leave me with much choice. I'm not going to pay extra just for the possible extra 2Mb.
