Sky Broadband ADSL?? Exchange?!?!

• Hi, Infidel,

Just thought you might like to know that I did actually sign up to Sky Broadband. Very efficient when taking your order, very efficient at sending out kit. CRAP at technical support. After cancelling existing ISP, Which of course you have to in order to get a MAC, installed Sky Broadband, but could get no connection to internet. Phoned technical support helpline which is useless, my 3 year old grandaughter could probably do more. Response from their technical support helpline was 'we will have to refer this to a higher level, they will phone you back.....wait for it, within the next five days'. 'I said are you seriously saying I cannot go to work or leave the house for 5 days until you phone back'? 'Yes' was there reply. I politely told them to forget it. Problem is I had to reinstall a dial up ISP until I find new Broadband, and watching the pages load is worse than watching paint dry. BE CAREFUL

I am also looking at getting sky basic (poss. not the promotional £26 a month deal which works out to about £31 a month with bt line rental).

I would get £15 a month tv; and free broadband; free weekend and eve calls and £40 set up fee plus £11 a month fee to bt rental. (with bt rental, £26 at 2mb download speed).

I am 2.31 km from my nearest exchange. so what speed could I expect? anyone know?!

currently on 'karoo' broadband at about £18 a month, about £13 kingston communication(rental and usage), and my pc is very slow, but that may be for other reasons?!. :-(

I'm on karoo broadband 500 which is £17.99 a month and supposed to be up to 0.5mbps.

Just tested my internet speed, my speed test results shown below...
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/11814942625478661401.html

Does anyone know how to interpret the results there? I'm not sure if you look at 'speed up' or 'speed down' column for your present/relevant speed.

I don't think so, and for my area I'm not sure yet either, as when you go onto sky website and stick on your tel number to see if you can get it in your area, it just tells you that you are on karoo/kc and you come to a full stop.

I am not in hull but can change to BT. As I couldn't wait a few years back for broadband to come to my area (when I moved into the countryside), on my bt line I changed to Kingston Communications so I could get onto the internet asap!!! A bit silly but I was chewing carpets too much waiting for my beloved internet usage. :p

I think kingston communications have Hull and some outer areas hooked into karoo and their (kc)phone provider only. This seems a bit of a disadavantage for Hull area people as they can't choose cheaper packages.

I live 1.92Km away from my exchange and yet with the Sky Mid package I should expect between 2Mb - 8Mb broadband. I am actually getting upload speeds of just 1.6Mb on average!

Its ridiculous I've called Sky customer services about it and they didnt bother doing anything. I basically didnt get much of a response and left it as is. Ideally I should pursue this but I think its all going to be in vain

Has anybody been in a similar situation?

You might live 1.92 Km away from my exchange as the crow flies but the actual length of the line could be 3 - 4 times longer.

You could also have a problem with your internal wiring , what are the stats ( connection speed , Line Attenuation and Noise Margin ) like from your router ?

Type in http://192.168.0.1 into your browser , user name ~ admin , password ~ sky (assuming you've not changed it to something else )

Post your stats up and someone will help you more if there's anything obviously causing your slow speeds.

Thanks, I will do next time I connect from home. Its just frustrating when the people that can help you don't and I just pretty much gave up. It was only when people mentioned it here that I remembered again and I thought of doing something about it.

Here are the results I get from the Sky test. I'm on the Mid package:

ADSL LINK DOWNSTREAM 2048kbps UPSTREAM 416kbps
LINE ATTEN 33db 19.5 db
NOISE MARGIN 29db 14db

The above may be 2048kbps but other speed test websites report about 1700kbps.

Is this the best I will get on the Mid package?

Thanks

If that is sync rate, the download speed looks more like the base package, not mid, but upload is a bit higher than I would expect on a 2meg link.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks albertross.

Okay here are my stats in a (hopefully) clearer format:

ADSL Link - Downstream 2048kbps, Line Attenuation 33db, Noise Margin 28.4db
ADSL Link - Upstream 416kbps, Line Attenuation 19db, Noise Margin 14db

Thanks

It looks as if you're capped to 2Mb , with that line attenuation and a 29db noise margin you should be on a lot more than 2Mb.

Send an email off to BroadbandCustomerService@BSkyB.com and keep at them until they do something about it.

P.s. probably won't make any difference but have you tried connecting to your master socket ? follow the instructions here to test your wiring.
