Toshiba laptop keeps shutting down when typing

Hi folks,
In need of some help for my laptop.
Basically as in the title. It keeps shutting down when typing. Sometimes I get to type a sentence, other times not even a word. If I type quickly with two hands I dont get one word, using one finger at a time I get a bit more done as long as its slow, but it still happens. Its not running on battery, but on mains as the battery no longer holds its charge (its an old girl but finances arent allowing to buy a new one).

From what I have read on the net it seems to that the BIOS needs updating ???? I have been on various websites where there are many updates to choose from but I havent a clue which to choose, so was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

The laptop is a Toshiba Model PSLD8E and the BIOS version info I found is INSYDE 1.50 09/12/2008

I'm really hoping someone can help as I have tried everything I know, system restore, Malware scan, cc cleaner.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi, we have a similar laptop with the same bios etc and a crap battery but can you be more specific about when it crashes? Does it crash when typing into a browser or something like Word and is the fan running really high before it dies?

No makes no difference what I'm typing in, even in the "run" command to get bios details. I've found a link on the gateway website http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/download_bios.jsp?service=UK so was going to try this. I thought it might be because its getting too hot, but even when it's not been on, as soon as I'm typing it shuts down. If I hold the power on it wakes back up and takes me back to where I was.

Visually inspect the fan inlet/outlet covers for sign of dust/fluff build up. If it looks blocked could run a hoover attachment over it (with laptop switched off of-course) and/or unscrew fan covers to do a proper clean.
Also, have you tried with the battery REMOVED altogether.

Is it only when typing, or is it just when it has been on for a length of time?

Also, does it announce it is shutting down, or just shut down?

Check your power settings and disable all low and critical battery state actions. I suspect your battery is not very good and is at some critical or low state which triggers whatever action has been set in the power options, probably hibernation or maybe standby, but without text or audible warnings.

Of course in the same way you have no time to type, you won't have time to get into power options so, as grumpycrab and closed suggested, try removing the battery and power up on mains only.

Another option might be booting into safe mode which perhaps gives you time to change the settings although I can't actually remember if safe mode prevents power options coming in to play.

The other option is to leave it plugged into the mains until the battery recovers some level of charge but if really bad, this may never happen.

Could be time for a new battery :)
