Nexen are not a top quality brand. The better budget tyres IMHO are Falken or Federal SS595's. Good all weather tyre with good longevity and grip.

Her husband works in the tyre fitting trade and you are on here trying to find the best price!!!

How rude of you. I never said he works in the tyre fitting trade, I said he was able to fit them. In fact he works for a rail company!!! I'm just trying to do her a favour and save her some money. I believe that comes under the "being a good friend" category?????

I think MK5huggy was wondering why you were looking for tyres if your friend was in the trade? Nothing malicious im sure...

    • They wanted to charge me to move the rear tyres to the front (they have never charged me for this when I've used them before) claiming they needed to be re-balanced.

Hi John. The above is true. I always prefer to get my rear tyres moved to the front because:
    1. You reduce the chance of cracking down the side of tyres as when they are moved to the front you know they will wear out by the next tyre change.
    2. You always good tyres at the back - as they don't wear out as fast, if you didn't rotate your tyres, the back ones could be into their last 50% but still run for a looong time.
    3. You're always changing 2 tyres - not so heavy on the pocket!
When you buy tyres they are balanced and therefore you probably don't need them to be rebalanced. However, I do know that I had a situation where I got some new tyres and asked for the rear ones to be moved to the front and then drove off and the next time I took to the motorway my car was not smooth at high speeds.

I took them to my local garage to check and they said they needed to rebalance the two tyres moved to the front.

Since then I always paid for the two rear tyres to be rebalanced. The advantage here is that you know that if you find problems when you drive, because they've balanced all 4 tyres, you can take it back to them with confidence that they've not done something right.

Hi AMO - same thinking here - I had two new tyres which were fitted to rear (half worn rears moved to front and all 4 balanced).

However at 70mph the steering starts to vibrate/shake, so I'm thinking it's not been balanced properly

I'm hoping as the garage does MOTs they'll have a rolling road to test it at 70mph so I don't have to waste fuel checking the muppets have got it right!

I may be wrong, but Ive always been advised to have your best tread tyres on the front??? It helps grip when steering surely? Why put your part worn tyres on the front so you have less grip again? The rears should last longer due to less wear, but there's no logic to putting them on the front as far as I can see

  • For anyone in Essex Jet tyres in basildon/canvey beat any quote i was able to get online. I went to them with a price for just supplying tyres. They came back and beat the price including fitting balancing and tracking.
I turned up after work without a prearranged appointment and they fitted them on the spot.....took about 20mins.

I have been using etyres and blackcircles for the past few years and comparing to some of the big name tyre fitters (kwik-fit etc) they are always extremely competitive, and I have had no problems recommending them. But this morning I ran over a screw which punctured the tyre very close to the sidewall. As I was dressed for work I didn't want the hassle of changing the wheel so drove to the nearest tyre place (independent), and not being able to shop around as I normally do I expected a huge bill. Instead he put on a new pirelli, which I've just checked was £20 cheaper than etyres so don't ignore the local independents when you're comparing costs.

the tread on your tyres is there to disperse water, not grip, its the rubber compound that differentiates between good and bad grip.
but yes if its front wheel drive then the best tyres should be on the front, but if its rear wheel drive then they will probably all wear fairly evenly and not be worth rotating. (in my personal experience ive found on a vehicle with rear wheel drive and no power steering i usually always needed front tyres and rear tyres around the same time).
