i am in the middle of making rhuebarb chutney....and it got me thinking about the pick your own farms...

this year i would like to have a go at making my own jam...last year i was too late..
so when do they normally start ? is it best to go in the begining or in the middle or near the end ?
and od they really work out a lot cheaper than in the markets etc...
this year i really am getting myself organised.....
with preserving......etc..... as at least i know what has gone into it ...lol...( even if i do get some desasters ..)Work to live= not live to work0 -
Oooh! Good question. I need to know that too. Must see if there are any I can reach though. Off for a google.
OK, Found THIS useful list of what is in season now
and on the same FARMA website THIS guide to local farm shops, Pick your own and Farmers Markets. My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

I was wondering this too and thanks for the link - our local pyo has a 24hour helpline which I've just rung, said they're closed today cos of the weather (well duh it's peeing it down here:rolleyes: ) but open tomorrow hopefully for strawberries, asparagus and rhubarb! Yippee I love their strawberries. So much tastier, cheaper than Tescos and you don't find loads of manky ones in the bottom of the punnet!
Here's hoping the weather will be good enough one day this week to take the kids...0 -
Oh blimey, some good ones on that site but could do with a bit of updating, one near me says 'applying for planning permission feb '03
I am going to look for the giant strawberry tomorrow, there is one on the way to where I have an appointment in the morning which puts the big strawberry they have near the roadside when it's open. One day I might be more organised...........

I remember my parents taking us to a pick-your-own strawberry farm when we were kids with the instruction to eat as much as we could before reaching the weighing scales. My little sis, however, could not be put off putting them in her basket, and no amount of cajoling could persuade her to eat any, so mom and dad had to pay for hers lol!

We have just come back from staying with OH's family. They live in Bicester, we had a great time on saturday picking strawberries there were loads and it was great fun!!
Our 2 year old was with us it kept her entertained for a while and we could also try as we picked (well you know the ones the get squashed you just have to eat them lol!)
The place was at Stanton St John you could also pick asparagus. There were two bouncy castles and a farm shop.
I think they probably are a bit cheaper but taste so much better. We have just made some jam with them and had it on HM scones- lovely!
We live in Yorkshire so not quite sure if strawbs are ready yet but will be enquiring!
I don't think rasps are ready till later on in summer

Thanks for that, don't see any round my way either.
I've been to one next to glasgow airport and it's certainly fun picking the berries with planes taking off over your head every 3 minutes. Do wonder if it's healthy tho!!!!
I lived in Kent a long time ago and the PYo's were great there, seemed like every country road had one every mile, yum yum yumJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Thanks for that link Kyle. I was wondering when the PYO starts and this has answered it and given me several farms around here so I have a choice.Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0
