    bluemonkey, it must be awful to be in your position - are you likely to get a council place in the near future?

    I agree that there should be far more social housing. I don't actually agree with the way the RTB scheme is administered, even though we have profited from it. However, I'm sure most people would taske advantage of it if they were in a position to.


    Would Housing Benefit not cover some of your rent if you rented privately?

    Can you afford to pay for 2 homes? If you buy your Nan's with a mortgage and I assume you have a mortgage on the one you live in. Do remember that you will only get £30 a month towards it which is the rent your Gran is paying at the moment. What would happen if you lost your job? Your Gran and Aunt could be homeless if you didn't keep up the mortgage payments.

    I assume your Gran as tenant will be the one to apply for a mortgage, will she get one? In my area the maximum discount, however long someone has lived in a property, is £26,000. Would it still be a feasible proposition?

    I expect your aunt is on the tenancy so she will never be thrown out when your Gran dies. She may be asked to move to a more suitable property but if she didn't want to I doubt she could be forced.She will certainly have a roof over her head. Therefore the suggestion of altruistic motives for buying the property are really just camouflage.

    Thanks SDW - and for the rest, I was not lecturing really, just trying to explain what it is like for us on the Housing List who cannot afford to buy and what the shortage of housing means - and if this person is buying to line their own pockets then I did not think it was fair.

    TBH I am not sure but it would meaning ideally finding somewhere with a long lease and from when we were looking there were very few in this area - I think we found 2 in a year and only one would have kids and as we have 2children under 5 they have to be suitable and a lot of places will not have children in them. While Housing Benefit might cover us, if it did not then we would not be able to move but you have to move in before they'll consider it and if you get there and they don't we would be crippled financially. Plus if we could only get short term then we would have to keep on moving the kids every six months unless we moved right away and I only have a small support network as it is (babysitting very rarely for example is maybe one or twice every 6 months that we can have a night out at the cinema) and with living away we would lose this completely as they do not drive so we would need to stay in this area. I know we are stuck with it, I am past complaining and wanted to explain, not lecture so sorry if it came across this way but I guess it does get my back up when another house is bought by family so they can sell it for profit when the parents die. That too is something I find too weird. The woman next door bought her mothers and ripped it apart around her mother and put her own kitchen in and bathroom and the like, just waiting for the mother to go before she moved in. I guess it is kind of like us - waiting for the neighbours to die so we can call the council and ask for the house. it's sad but true. There are a lot of elderly single people or couples in 3 bedroom houses that are council owed so - maybe one day - not anytime in the near future that we can see. Aparently you have to be living in a caravan and get the local papers involved before you even get a sniff!! They are alos building lots of flats or apartments instead of houses these days and they are small aimed at smaller families. I don't know - maybe one day though!!

    I don't know a lot about Housing Benefit, but I thought you could get something called a Pre-Tenancy Determination which determines what HB would be willing to pay?

    And I don't think every landlord chucks you out after six months?

    Wrong reason. It was designed to stop the government from having to shell out massive amounts in repairs for decrepid old council houses :cool:

    I don't see anything wrong with what Dave is doing. Someone will be living in the house, whether Dave owns it or not, and then the taxpayer will no longer be responsible for the maintenance if so.

    I think you will find the maximum discount is about £24k or thereabouts. All the tenants must agree to the sale. You should be able to buy with your gran even though you don't live there. You may find the buildings insurance, water rates and repairs etc. come to more than the rent your gran currently pays. Collect the forms from your local housing office and they should explain it all.

    Get a mortgage with your gran/aunt and let her buy it in her name. You go on the will as the only beneficiary (sp sorry).

    I dont think it's morally wrong, your trying to secure a future for your aunt aswell as yourself. It's no more morally wrong that all those people buying up second homes, btl and investment properties.
