Mags the kitten

So....

After my male kitten kept roaming and disappearing for days I decided it was time for him to be neutered for his own safety.

Apparently un-neutered cats roam up to 5 miles looking for a mate which leaves them in danger of being run over. They also fight with other dominant toms and neutering them is supposed to prolong their lives.

Checked him in - he was a bit distressed as has never been in a cat box. Got a call at 13:30 yesterday to say he died under anaesthetic and they couldn't revive him.

Instead of taking him home for lovely food and treats we dug a grave and buried him under our cherry tree - his favourite place in the garden.

I'll never forgive myself for taking this poor healthy boy to his premature death. I am so devastated and the house feels so empty without him.

It hasn't sunk in yet - I still expect him to be coming to greet me when i'm home from work and he always slept by my feet in bed.

Apparently the odds of this happening are 100,000/1 and my poor kitten was that 100,000th one.

If i hadn't taken him he would be sitting in the garden loving his life.

I can't believe this has happenend!!!

I'm really sorry for your loss :(

However, it is very, very rare for cats to die like this, whereas cats getting run over is very common.

You did nothing wrong, you were just unlucky.

So sorry, my guinea pig died the same way, rescued him from someone who basically was neglecting him and planned to pop him in with my girls once he had been done but he never came home,
As you say, its very rare, poor vet was so sorry and quite upset over the phone so proves that it doesnt happen often at all. Didn't have him that long but still grew attatched to him and was looking forward to his new adventures :(
You did the best you could at the time and unfortunatly were just unlucky so dont beat yourself up over it.
:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly :D

Really sorry to hear about your loss, I too lost a beloved pet, it's very upsetting.

Don't feel guilty about it, you did what you thought was best.
Every procedure carries a level of risk, I don't think it's made clear, for fear that people stop neutering their pets.

Personally I did have doubts about neutering cats and dogs, but when I saw that even PETA are in favour, I was convinced it's the less of two evils because of the number of unwanted pets.
If you hadn't done it, he may have got run over as you say, and you would have felt even worse.

Thanks for all your lovely responses. I'm really grateful.

I was welling up at work today. I feel ridiculous because you know some people think it's just a pet but he was part of me and my family. We don't have kids.

He really brought my older cat to life. Before Mags he just slept and ate then when Mags came along they play fought and groomed each other. We called Mags the apprentice because he copied everything our cat did.

It's easy to say in hindsight but I did have a horrible feeling and should have trusted my instinct and taken him back home.

I feel more guilty getting a refund for his procedure - I'd rather have my boy back.

I keep thinking i should do some good and go to the rescue centre and take the cat that's been there the longest and give it as much love as i can.

It's too early for all that though but i know i'll never get a kitten again that needs to go through a neutering procedure. I just couldn't do it again.

thats exactly how I feel - my 3-year old pusscat has been missing for about 3 weeks now. Even though I'm a fairly private person at work, my nearest colleagues knew something was wrong the week he disappeared. I miss him - I miss the company and presence of a much-loved pet. I found one of the many little make-up brushes he's commandeered over the last 3 years, under one of the rugs when I was doing a hoovering earlier today, and I cried a little.

I'm so sorry to hear your news anrutpea, but don't blame yourself, please, you were doing what you thought was best.

    Thinking of you xx
  • So so sorry to hear about your kitten.

I too lost a cat under anaesthetic, it will be 2 years ago next month. Although my boy was only 4 his heart gave up while he was having surgery on his bladder. He was so full of life, even in the hours before his surgery he was playing.

Everyone is different, but even though I still had an older cat I felt I had to get her a friend as soon as I could. No cat could replace him, but there are so many that need homes. I went to a rescue and just over 3 weeks later I brought home my 2 little boys.

I still miss Jasper and I think i always will, I have his pictures all over the house, but giving a home to my 2 rescue boys really helped me.
