Unlocking an Orange phone - anti competitive

You can get a temporary unlock by jail braking the iPhone. But the lock state is kept on the Appler servers. So when you update or connect to iTunes it just get locked again....
Just to clarify, connecting a jailbroken/software unlocked iPhone to iTunes won't relock it. Only updating the software would do that, but your premise is correct, a software unlock like ultrasn0w is only good for the software version it was designed for and an update via iTunes will relock the phone.====0 -
Its possible for an unlocked phone to be re-locked, not sure about a jailbroken one, but Apple currently don't use this method.
You are going to confuse this thread with your answer that has little relevance.
What do you even mean by "Its possible for an unlocked phone to be re-locked, not sure about a jailbroken one"?
If a phone is unlocked via the software method (ultrasn0w etc) it is unlocked via jailbreaking. They are part of the same process, the handset is jailbroken and then unlocked from the Cydia repository.
If a phone is then software updated it will remove the jailbreak (and hence the jailbreak unlock), that's all Apple 101.
It's fairly obvious that Apple don't jailbreak phones to unlock them, so not sure what that point is making.====0 -

If you syncing a phone with iTunes then iTunes attempts to makes checks on Apples database about the phone. Apple CAN if they wish relock the phone to a SIM via iTunes in this process, they choose not to, as lets fact it it's the networks loss not Apples.
I meant to say they may not be able to de-jailbreak it, so it's still in a jailbroken state and can run unsigned apps, but the sim lock has been reinstated.0 -

No, sim lock status is only checked at the end of an update or restore, it is not part of the sync process.====0 -
It is also worth noting, that jailbroken handsets sell for considerably less than the equivalent Apple unlocked version.
It strikes me as a bit like filing down a 10p count to make a 5p one - pointless!0 -

I wouldn't go that far, a good jailbreak adds a lot to the usage of the phone. There are a number of excellent Cydia apps that make the phone far more functional (for example, notifications were a Cydia app long before Apple incorporated them)
I do agree that the jailbreak unlock is less useful and a pain to have to do, it takes one click on the "new firmware" button in iTunes to end up with a locked phone again.====0 -

When you have an iPhone unlocked you do not have to update or restore the phone, it's done as a connection to iTunes.
Flipping the bit to locked or unlocked does not need a restore0 -

I can assure you that sim lock status is only actioned on completion of a restore or update of firmware, unlocking is actually a slightly different procedure and can take place by a sync in iTunes while a SIM card of an alternative network is inserted, (even though the official Apple stance is that a restore is required). It seems to have been a glitch in unlocking procedure they haven't bothered to rectify.====0 -
When my husbands iphone was unlocked recently we had the email to say it was unlocked. It told us to restore but as soon as I connected it to itunes it recognised the new network sim without having to do anything.0
