I am sure that I used to order from these people about 30 years ago, the catalogue looks the same. They didn't used to be known as Coates did they? The writing style looks the same.

Had some great bargains and some unusual lucky dip parcels from them including towelling fents

In Liverpool and the North West there are fabric shops called Abakhan where you can buy pieces of fabric by weight and cheap fabric on the roll.

Does anybody know a shop like this in London or the South East? Especially somewhere that has fabric pieces by weight.

    Thanks Moneysavers.

    hi
you can get very nice cheap fabric from the asian shops that sell loose fabric when a suit sells and there are just a few left they reduce the price and you can get a bargain hope this helps:)
  • abakhan is amazing i got a huge bag of ribbon yards and yards for just 60p great value and they do roll ends at around one pound a metre

    Wow this is spooky!
I have been looking for dress fabric websites for the last few days but not much luck. I have been given a new sewing machine and want to make the kind of clothes that White Stuff and Fat Face sell for silly money, but it is difficult to buy the lovely fabrics that they use. The clothes themselves would be so easy to make if I could find these fabrics as they are often just unlined A-line skirts or simple fitted sleeveless blouses but it is the material that makes them look special. Oh well, if anyone knows, you lot will! I live in a bit of a retail backwater so have trouble finding anything decent around here....
    Thanks, and good luck,
    Lazy xx

have you tried where they sell the asian fabric its loose fabric and end of lines are sold off cheap and the range of colours and patterns is amazing hope this helps :)
  • Hi all :)

I am thinking of undertaking a big project at home to replace all the curtains in our house with homemade ones (the current ones have definately seen better days!). I also want to make some throws for the sofa and 2 chairs. Where would be the best place to source the fabric from? I think I will need quite a bit as there are 4 rooms to cover, 2 with smallish windows and 2 with large bay windows. I only want white fabric as I intend to dye it at home.

    Many thanks,
    Jovi x
  • Where in the country are you? Oop North we have the Fabric Factory Centre at Blaydon. I used to buy all my material there when I made our curtains. Also material to cover some kitchen chairs. I think I can recall getting some cotton fabric which was 50p a metre (it was a good few years ago though). The last time I was there they still had a massive range in both choice and price. I have only ever bought cheap material from there and have always got what I have gone for when I have needed to.

How about charity shop white sheets? They did that on superscrimpers last night
  • Thanks for replies, I live near Manchester, have had a quick look but couldn't see any obvious factory outlets :)

Will try the charity shops tomorrow, it can be my little mission after the school run :D

Being a fellow almost mancunian (10 miles...) I can recommend Abakhans in manchester on Oldham street. Literally thousands upon thousands of fabrics, from roll end bargains to luxury duchesse satin/silk (used in bridal gowns and such). I've just made my curtains for my huge 18 feet wide window with a 6 foot drop for less than £20.00, that includes the thread and heading tape (which they do a massive roll for £2). Its essentially a shop with large bins and shelves of roll ends when you walk in, then the back wall of the roll ends (can be up to 30 metres on them) and upstairs is your embellishments and ordering bits as well as dressmaking full rolls.

I'll probably see you in there...I spend far too much time making a bit of everything...
