Interesting. I read threads often where people have problem's with coverage or disputed contract ie fewer minutes or price, and the advice is always that there are two separate contracts - 1) phone purchase/freebie and 2) the 18 month or whatever service contract. And that one doesn't affect the other.

Yes, they 'sold' the phone for £0 on the condition a service contract was bought. But if your provider can't provide coverage or reduces coverage, you can't return the phone and cancel the contract. Supposedly because they are two unlinked contracts.

Me, I'd return the phone for an easy life but it does make you wonder.

Facts have to be proved. Your common sense differs from mine.

It's not 'unwanted' in the first place. The customer didn't want to return it and to cancel the contract without charges.

Grumbler- I am surprised at you turning this into a debating circle discussion.

You and I both know that if the phone is not returned or paid for, there will only be one loser with a big penalty too.

Pete - debate it all you like - but, please, after you return the handset. You read my initial post. Willing to take the chance????

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I just don't like peremptory yet groundless statements. Yes, Three are likely to blackmail the OP, but this doesn't meant that they have any lawful ground for reporting a default. However, they can easily do this without any grounds whatsoever.
Like I said in "Tell the new regulator what you think about financial services in the UK" thread, "The current system of credit reference agencies in UK is a disgrace"

Actually, its fine - as far as it goes, BUT the way it has evolved to disenfranchise anyone who had a legitimate complaint by denying them their 'day in court' is appalling. That, and the current process of turning debts into a commodity.

A network would much rather you paid, but if you don't will walk away from you simply to make what it can from the debt to a third party, whilst destroying you financial credit file. No requirement to work with you to resolve any issues.

That's what I find so galling.
